Ecomorphology of Cyclorrhaphan Larvae (Diptera)

Ecomorphology of Cyclorrhaphan Larvae (Diptera) PDF Author: Graham E. Rotheray
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319925466
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
This book offers an overview of the larva of Diptera Cyclorrhapha. It first discusses the principal forms, functions and roles of larvae, and then evaluates feeding, locomotion and respiration in larval saprophages, phytophages and zoophages as keys to understanding and predicting larval morphology. It also highlights how the environment affects morphology, the adaptiveness of morphological features and compares the adaptive features. Assessing the larval attributes that have the potential to explain the success of the Cyclorrhapha, the book also suggests future research directions and provides a summary of main findings and conclusions. As such, it appeals to entomologists, evolutionary biologists and Diptera researchers in all fields.

Integrated Management of Insect Pests on Canola and Other Brassica Oilseed Crops

Integrated Management of Insect Pests on Canola and Other Brassica Oilseed Crops PDF Author: Gadi V P Reddy
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1780648200
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 410

Book Description
This book comprehensively reviews current pest management practices and explores novel integrated pest management strategies in Brassica oilseed crops. It is essential reading for pest management practitioners and researchers working on pest management in canola and other Brassica crops worldwide. Canola, mustard, camelina and crambe are the most important oilseed crops in the world. Canola is the second largest oilseed crop in the world providing 13% of the world's supply. Seeds of these species commonly contain 40% or more oil and produce meals with 35 to 40% protein. However, its production has declined significantly in recent years due to insect pest problems. The canola pest complexes are responsible for high insecticide applications on canola. Many growers rely on calendar-based spraying schedules for insecticide applications. The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella and flea beetles Phyllotreta spp. (P. cruciferae and P. striolata)cause serious damage to canola. In the Northern Great Plains, USA, for instance, P. xylostella is now recorded everywhere that canola is grown. Severe damage to canola plants can be caused by overwintering populations of flea beetles feeding on newly emerged seedlings. Cabbage seed pod weevil (Ceutorhynchus obstrictus), swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii), and tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) are also severe pests on canola. Minor pests include aphids (cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae and turnip aphid, Hyadaphis erysimi) and grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes.

Proceedings of a symposium honoring the careers of Ross and Joyce Bell and their contributions to scientific work. Burlington, Vermont, 12?15 June 2010 PDF Author: Terry L. Erwin

Book Description
On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Ross T. Bell, Professor Emeritus of Entomology at the University of Vermont, his colleagues and former students staged a Festschrift in his honor that included his wife and oft-times co-author, Joyce Bell. Two days of scientific presentations and a field day resulted in twenty-six manuscripts on such diverse organisms as Coleoptera, Collembola, and Diptera and in such disparate fields as taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, with a sprinkling of natural history and cyberinfrastructure. Mostly, the theme of the papers focus on the beetle family Carabidae, on which the Bells spent a number of decades in pursuit of information on taxonomy and biology, particularly for the wrinkled bark beetles, the rhysodines. Twenty-six scientific contributions make up this volume and they are introduced by the preface and first two papers on the Bells themselves and their other contributions to teaching and natural history studies in the environs of Burlington, Vermont.

Management of Insect Pests in Vegetable Crops

Management of Insect Pests in Vegetable Crops PDF Author: Ramanuj Vishwakarma
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000596710
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
This new book on the sustainable management of insect pests in important vegetables offers valuable management strategies in detail. It focuses on eco-friendly technology and approaches to mitigating the damage caused by insect pests with special reference to newer insecticides. Chapters in the volume provide an introduction to vegetable entomology and go on to present a plethora of research on sustainable eco-friendly pest management strategies for root vegetables, spice crops, tuber crops, and more. Vegetable crops that are infested by several insect pests from the nursery to the harvesting stage cause enormous crop losses. Given that it is estimated that up to 40 percent of global crops are lost to agricultural pests each year, new research on effective management strategies is vital. The valuable information provided in this book will be very helpful for faculty and advanced-level students, scientists and researchers, policymakers, and others involved in pest management for vegetable crops.

Forensic Entomology

Forensic Entomology PDF Author: Dorothy Gennard
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119945801
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Forensic Entomology provides undergraduates with a concise introduction to the subject. The book is written with the clarity necessary for students starting out in entomology yet authoritative enough to prove useful for more experienced researchers. Worked examples of the necessary mathematics, including how to use excel to process data, coupled with lab protocols and self-assessment questions make the book an essential starting point in the subject. Assuming little prior knowledge of either biology or entomology the book provides information on identification, life cycles and ecology of insects presented in a forensic context. Information is conveyed in an accessible style with practical tasks and suggestions for further reading included in each chapter. Fully revised and updated to include new research in the field New chapter on aquatic forensic entomology New pictorial key to aid identification of species contributed by Dr. Krzysztof Szpila, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Poland Further coverage of civil applications of forensic entomology Practical tasks and further reading included to aid understanding Colour plate section and improved illustrations throughout to assist in the identification of insects associated with the corpse Approaches the topic from the dual perspectives of basic entomology and its forensic applications Covers the contributions to forensic investigations of both flies and beetles Provides information on culturing insects collected from crime scenes Guides students through the processes of writing entomological court reports and presenting in court alongside the scientific topics Extended coverage of PMI calculations, role of professional associations for forensic entomologists and sampling at the crime scene New sections to discuss the identification of traces of explosives found in larvae, puparia and pupae and DNA sampling from insects
