Clinical supervision serves a key component in ensuring practitioners' competency and professional identity. This practice also allows more skilled clinicians to serve as gatekeepers to the field, which helps protect clients and the profession. As the use of the Internet increases, many clinical services, including supervision, are more common in this environment. The purpose of this dissertation is to produce two manuscripts, each summarizing a study related to the use of web-based clinical supervision of counselors (i.e., cybersupervision). Using a t test, the first study compared supervisees' perceptions of the effectiveness of supervision when participating in online, full-spectrum, synchronous cybersupervision as compared to engaging in traditional, face-to-face clinical supervision. The results indicated no significant difference in either condition. This suggests that the practice of cybersupervision may be as effective as that of traditional, face-to-face supervision. The second study examined how supervisees experience cybersupervision. The data revealed that supervisees tend to focus most of their energy on establishing an authentic relationship with their clinical supervisors. The quest to attain such authenticity is impacted by an amalgamation of environmental, interpersonal, and intrapsychic factors. Of these, the supervisee's feelings of anxiety and the supervisor's ability to establish rapport were most notable.

The purpose of this dissertation was to add to the professional literature in counselor education and supervision through inquiry and synthesis of research among online teaching, online counseling, and online communities of practice through the supervision lens of the Discrimination Model. A unique, research-informed framework for synchronous online supervision (i.e., cybersupervision) was developed out of this research with the purpose of guiding supervisors to utilize specific strategies to mitigate technology and interpersonal barriers that interfere with social presence and the process of cybersupervision. By utilizing a research-informed framework, supervisors can optimize the conditions for counselor skill development during cybersupervision. To address the gap in current research on the impact of barriers on social presence during cybersupervision, a Likert-type survey was administered to assess the association between the level of social presence (i.e., engagement) and hindering phenomena (i.e., technology and interpersonal barriers) among counselor supervisees who experienced cybersupervision as a part of their graduate training. The survey measured supervisees’ (N = 12) social presence with the Igroup Presence Questionnaire, which included three subscales that measured spatial presence, involvement, and experienced realness. Barriers were measured using the Supervision Hindering Phenomena Survey, which included two subscales that measured pure technology barriers and interpersonal barriers. Respondents’ scores were summed and disaggregated through a split-half median process to determine the levels (i.e., low or high) of experienced barriers and social presence which were used in 2 x 2 tables to test for associations. This research experiment is a N=1 case study design, replicated 5 times, to investigate counselor self-efficacy and skill competence in an online/distance learning practicum course. Cybersupervision, or electronically mediated counseling supervision and practice, is of growing interest to the profession. The research in this area is minimal, but does provide positive findings which indicate effective counselor training and supervision practices. This study's purpose is not only to add to the research in this area, but also to show that counselor self-efficacy (CSE) can increase as counselor skill acquisition increases through the use of online counselor supervision (Cybersupervision). This researcher found the participants in this study increased both CSE and skill acquisition in all five experiments, and in 4 of 5 experiments the results were significant and conclusive.
