No Such Thing as Small Talk

No Such Thing as Small Talk PDF Author: Melissa Lamson
Publisher: Happy About
ISBN: 1600051901
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 113

Book Description
Many business leaders, when they begin to work overseas or interact professionally with teams abroad, are surprised by how much they thought they knew about the other culture, but how little it counts for on the ground. The reality is that communication is multi-dimensional, and simply knowing a foreign language doesn't mean one automatically understands the culture that goes with it. Idiom, psychological factors and cultural nuance all come into play. To grasp a culture, and communicate meaningfully to it, you need familiarity with language, of course, but also with non-verbal communication, customs, perceived values, and concepts of time and space. "Melissa Lamson," with years of experience in creating and nurturing high-performing global teams, understands how "It's not enough to know the language!" In her book, " No Such Thing as Small Talk," she focuses on Germany, a major business partner for the United States, and the country in which she has lived and worked for over a decade. Business leaders today expect to face cultural differences when they do business with, for example, China or Brazil. But with a Western, industrialized country like Germany, one that displays a business etiquette and work ethic similar to the United States, it is easy to overlook the differences simply because so much appears, on the surface, to be the same. The differences are not in your face but subtle. And these small, yet critical, differences are exactly what Melissa's book will help you identify, respect and bridge. Melissa succinctly presents what she calls seven keys, or principles, to unlocking the German business mind. Her principles, whether they relate to process, punctuality, discipline or email communication, are insightful, personal and compelling. Not only does she clearly lay out the differences, but she also offers a cultural perspective that is rich with personal narrative. If you plan to be in any way professionally engaged with Germany--whether you wish to participate in trade fairs, carry out negotiations with partners or colleagues, discuss schedules or terms with customers, or even apply for a job in Germany--the appropriate cultural understanding, as this book describes, will create mutual trust and will quite likely be the key to your business success.

Cultural Differences as a Hidden Hurdle to Successful Business

Cultural Differences as a Hidden Hurdle to Successful Business PDF Author: Isabelle Mrugalla
Publisher: diplom.de

Pages : 75

Book Description
Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The main effect of globalisation over recent decades has been the development of the world as a united market place. Through multinational companies, globally accepted management styles or organisational structures the impression might be given that there are hardly big differences in the way people do business all over the world. However, the variety of human cultures makes it impossible to believe that there is a uniform theory corresponding to all cultures on earth or assimilating their way of doing business. Misunderstandings while doing business or even failure of business relationships are, despite ever increasing market transparency, part of every day business life. It is less frequently the consequence of economic discrepancies but more often hidden cultural incompatibilities that can cause problems between two or more parties. Even between countries that have maintained business relationships for many years, as is the case between Germany and Spain, the problem of cultural differences is unfortunately present and moreover underestimated. For Germany, the European export champion, Spain has been for at least a decade one of the top export destinations. Also German companies located in Spain contributed 8% to that country s G.D.P. for 2010. Those big subsidiaries originated from a successful attempt to do business with a different culture and yet, to a greater or lesser extent, still face this difficulty every day. This applies equally to enterprises that are pure exporters, those having production plants, distribution or sales departments in the respective country. Helping businesses avoid the potential obstacles arising from cultural differences through sensitivity and understanding would improve working relationships and smoothen the path toward economic growth. Hit hard by the European economic crisis, Spain had and still has to suffer economic cutbacks. Since Germany is the second largest destination for Spanish exports it needs to maintain this presence in Germany. As the head of Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the German chancellor Angela Merkel pointed out on the German-Hispanic summit conference on 2nd of February 2011 in Madrid, there is still a lot of potential that can be exploited when both parties are pro-active. Looking at the above mentioned facts it is evident that both countries need each other. Besides creating a common political base, it is essential for their [...]

Brazilians Working With Americans/Brasileiros que trabalham com americanos

Brazilians Working With Americans/Brasileiros que trabalham com americanos PDF Author: Orlando R. Kelm
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292779844
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Doing business internationally requires understanding not only other languages, but even more so the business practices and cultures of other countries. In the case of Brazilians working with Americans, a fundamental difference for all parties to understand is that Brazilian business culture is based on developing personal relationships between business partners, while American businesspeople often prefer to get down to hard "facts and figures" quickly, with fewer personal preliminaries. Negotiating such differences is crucial to creating successful business relationships between the two countries, and this book is designed to help businesspeople do just that. Brazilians Working With Americans presents ten short case studies that effectively illustrate many of the cultural factors that come into play when North American business professionals work in Brazil. The authors summarize each case and the aspects of culture it involves, and American and Brazilian executives comment on the cultural differences highlighted by that case. A list of topics and questions for discussion also help draw out the lessons of each business situation. To make the book equally useful to Brazilians and Americans (whether businesspeople or language students), the entire text is presented in both English and Portuguese. In addition, Apple QuickTime movies of the executives' comments, which allow viewers to see and hear native speakers of both languages, are available on the Internet at www.laits.utexas.edu/orkelm/casos/intro.html.
