Crystallinity of RF-Sputtered MoS2 Films

Crystallinity of RF-Sputtered MoS2 Films PDF Author: Jeffrey R. Lince

Book Description
The crystallinity and morphology of thin, radio-frequency (rf)-sputtered MoS2 films deposited on 440C stainless steel substrates at both ambient (approx. 70 C) and high temperatures (245 C) were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by x ray diffraction (Read thin film photography and 0-20 scans). Under SEM, the films exhibited a 'ridgelike' (or platelike) formation region for thicknesses between 0.18 and 1.0 micrometer MoS2. X-ray diffraction was shown to give more detailed and accurate information than electron diffraction previously used for elucidating the structure of sputtered lubricant films. Keywords: Solid lubricant films, Molybdenum disulfide, Radio frequency sputtering, Thin film stress, Lattice defects, X ray diffraction.

Book Description
Since the great success of graphene, atomically thin-layered nanomaterials, called two dimensional (2D) materials, have attracted tremendous attention due to their extraordinary physical properties. Specifically, van der Waals heterostructured architectures based on a few 2D materials, named atomic-scale Lego, have been proposed as unprecedented platforms for the implementation of versatile devices with a completely novel function or extremely high-performance, shifting the research paradigm in materials science and engineering. Thus, diverse 2D materials beyond existing bulk materials have been widely studied for promising electronic, optoelectronic, mechanical, and thermoelectric applications. Especially, this Special Issue included the recent advances in the unique preparation methods such as exfoliation-based synthesis and vacuum-based deposition of diverse 2D materials and also their device applications based on interesting physical properties. Specifically, this Editorial consists of the following two parts: Preparation methods of 2D materials and Properties of 2D materials

Structure of Molybdenum Disulfide Films Sputtered on Substrates at Various Temperatures

Structure of Molybdenum Disulfide Films Sputtered on Substrates at Various Temperatures PDF Author: Talivaldis Spalvins

Pages : 12

Book Description
Molybdenum disulfide films 300 to 400 A thick were rf sputtered on aluminum and nickel surfaces at elevated, ambient, and liquid nitrogen temperatures. Electron transmission micrographs and electron diffraction patterns were taken to determine the structural growth. These transmission micrographs revealed that sputtered MoS2 films at ambient and elevated temperatures (320 and 150 C) formed an irregular network of ridges. The electron diffraction patterns of these films showed relatively sharp diffraction rings, indicating crystallinity. The transmission micrographs of sputtered films at liquid nitrogen temperatures revealed a continuous featureless film. The electron diffraction patterns showed broad, diffused rings indicating an amorphous film. The transmission micrographs of a post-annealed (425 C) MoS2 film sputtered at liquid-nitrogen temperature revealed the tendency for ridge formation. Electron diffraction patterns also showed increased sharpness of the diffraction rings. Friction tests showed that MoS2 films deposited at ambient and elevated temperatures exhibited good lubricating properties. The MoS2 films deposited at cryogenic temperatures had no lubricating characteristics.

Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1990 PDF Author: B.D. Sartwell

Book Description
Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1990 presents the Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and 8th International Conference on Thin Films, held in San Diego, California on April 2-6, 1990. It contains 219 papers covering a wide range of topics related to metallurgical coatings and thin films, including high temperature coatings, hard coatings, diamond films, tribology, and ion beam modification. Organized into 99 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion of a thermochemical model for diamond growth from the vapor phase and an experiment in large area diamond coating using a combustion flame torch in its traversing mode. It then explores the properties of diamond films, preparation of diamond-like carbon films using various ion-beam-assisted techniques, deposition of diamond-like films by laser ablation, and coating of cubic BN films on different substrates. The book examines surface processes and rate-determining steps in plasma-induced chemical vapor deposition, and addition of rare earths to improve scale adherence on heat-resisting alloys and coatings. The reader is introduced to high temperature wear and clearance control coatings, thermal barrier coatings, and corrosion resistant coatings. The book also discusses modification of coatings/surfaces to reduce friction; the mechanics of the tribology of thin films systems; mechanochemical interactions in the tribological behavior of materials; analysis and micromechanical testing of tribological coatings; surface modification using directed ion beams; and industrial equipment and processes. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in metallurgical coatings and thin films.
