Book Description
It is important to do research to try to find out what social forces account for such a high incidence of interpersonal violence in the developing countries and to discover any differences that exist between these countries and the more developed countries. Tibamanya Mushanga has attempted to do this in his study about homicide in Uganda. The research presents an analysis of the incidence, trends and patterns of criminal homicide from among a sample of 484 cases committed between 1955 and 1966 in three districts (Ankole, Toro and Kigezi) of Western Uganda. The primary source of his data was the court files, both the district courts and the High Court. These data were supplemented with personal interviews with village elders and policemen, newspaper reports and other information. He also included an analysis of homicide among a number of other tribal groups in Uganda.

Offences Against the Person

Offences Against the Person PDF Author: Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza
Publisher: Fountain Books
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
"Offences Against the Person: Homicides and Non-fatal Assaults in Uganda, covers the substantive law on homicide and non-fatal assaults in Uganda. It is based on judicial interpretation of the Uganda Penal Code - the principal criminal legislation in the country. Ugandan law was originally based on English law and the Uganda Penal Code is still principally a reaction of criminal law as it existed in Britain in 1930. However, since independence, the Uganda Judiciary has interpreted the law in terms of Uganda's own political, cultural, social and economic circumstances. Using the records of Ugandan courts as well as older English Court Records - and of the Court of Appeal for Eastern Africa - the book gives students and scholars of criminal law details of the cases on which important judgements have been made and which therefore provide the basis for future decisions." "By answering questions of how wider policy issues have impacted or should impact on criminal law, the author hopes that students of law will be better prepared to deal with issues of law reform, especially from a human rights perspective."--BOOK JACKET.

Social Problems in Africa

Social Problems in Africa PDF Author: Apollo Rwomire
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313003920
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Despite the recent growth of research on social problems facing the people of sub-Saharan Africa, there remains a critical lack of conceptual, epistemological, and empirical research and documentation. This sophisticated new book attempts to fill that gap by synthesizing, interpreting, and extending the existing literature on conditions that constitute serious impediments to socio-economic development in Africa. It provides an original and up-to-date survey of key problems ranging from poverty and inequality to violence and crime. The contributors, all of whom have lived or worked in Africa, show how social problems emerge, how they are defined, and how various actors attempt to deal with them. This timely book provides a much needed analysis of the major issues and debates regarding the dynamics of social problems in the African context. Social Problems in Africa is broken into four parts. The first introduces readers to the nature of social problems in general and provides a framework for analyzing and understanding social problems in an African context. Part II, on culture, human rights and democracy, examines these crucial aspects of social problems in Africa, as well as issues such as language and colonialism. Part III focuses on poverty and inequality, while conflict and violence is the focus of Part IV. Together, the chapters in this volume provide the most comprehensive and systematic approach to the issues available, bringing much-needed attention to the problems in Africa from the perspective of scholars who have lived and worked there.

Handbook of Crime Correlates

Handbook of Crime Correlates PDF Author: Lee Ellis
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080920098
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 405

Book Description
Over the past two centuries, many aspects of criminal behavior have been investigated. Finding this information and making sense of it all is difficult when many studies would appear to offer contradictory findings. The Handbook of Crime Correlates collects in one source the summary analysis of crime research worldwide. It provides over 400 tables that divide crime research into nine broad categories: - Pervasiveness and intra-offending relationships - Demographic factors - Ecological and macroeconomic factors - Family and peer factors - Institutional factors - Behavioral and personality factors - Cognitive factors - Biological factors - Crime victimization and fear of crime Within these broad categories, tables identify regions of the world and how separate variables are or are not positively or negatively associated with criminal behavior. Criminal behavior is broken down into separate offending categories of violent crime, property crime, drug offenses, sex offenses, delinquency, general and adult offenses, and recidivism. Accompanying each table is a description of what each table indicates in terms of the positive or negative association of specific variables with specific types of crime by region. This book should serve as a valuable resource for criminal justice personnel and academics in the social and life sciences interested in criminal behavior.
