Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 191

Book Description
This volume includes the proceedings of a NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on the physiology of the Creatine Kinase catalyzed reaction in brain bioenergetics and on the pathophysiology of Neurologic and Psychiatric Diseases. The workshop was held in Tbilisi, Georgia in June 2001. Topics include the Creatine Kinase systems in brain, heart, and muscle; the creatine transporter in brain; and disorders of creatine and ATP metabolism. The present volume will be of particular interest to cell biologists interested in bioenergetics and the physiology of the CK catalyzed reaction in brain and other excitable tissues; neurobiologists interested in the physiology of the CK catalyzed reaction in brain, pediatricians interested in metabolic diseases affecting ATP metabolism and creatine metabolism and transport, and neurologists interested in the effects of creatine in neurodegenerative diseases.

Biomarkers in Bone Disease

Biomarkers in Bone Disease PDF Author: Victor R. Preedy
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789400776920
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In the past decade there has been a major sea change in the way disease is diagnosed and investigated due to the advent of high throughput technologies, such as microarrays, lab on a chip, proteomics, genomics, lipomics, metabolomics etc. These advances have enabled the discovery of new and novel markers of disease relating to autoimmune disorders, cancers, endocrine diseases, genetic disorders, sensory damage, intestinal diseases etc. In many instances these developments have gone hand in hand with the discovery of biomarkers elucidated via traditional or conventional methods, such as histopathology or clinical biochemistry. Together with microprocessor-based data analysis, advanced statistics and bioinformatics these markers have been used to identify individuals with active disease or pathology as well as those who are refractory or have distinguishing pathologies. New analytical methods that have been used to identify markers of disease and is suggested that there may be as many as 40 different platforms. Unfortunately techniques and methods have not been readily transferable to other disease states and sometimes diagnosis still relies on single analytes rather than a cohort of markers. There is thus a demand for a comprehensive and focused evidenced-based text and scientific literature that addresses these issues. Hence the formulation of Biomarkers in Disease. The series covers a wide number of areas including for example, nutrition, cancer, endocrinology, cardiology, addictions, immunology, birth defects, genetics, and so on. The chapters are written by national or international experts and specialists.

Inherited Metabolic Disease in Adults

Inherited Metabolic Disease in Adults PDF Author: Carla E. M. Hollak
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199972133
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 657

Book Description
As clinical management of inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) has improved, more patients affected by these conditions are surviving into adulthood. This trend, coupled with the widespread recognition that IMDs can present differently and for the first time during adulthood, makes the need for a working knowledge of these diseases more important than ever. Inherited Metabolic Disease in Adults offers an authoritative clinical guide to the adult manifestations of these challenging and myriad conditions. These include both the classic pediatric-onset conditions and a number of new diseases that can manifest at any age. It is the first book to give a clear and concise overview of how this group of conditions affects adult patients, a that topic will become a growing imperative for physicians across primary and specialized care.

Creatine Kinase Isoenzymes

Creatine Kinase Isoenzymes PDF Author: H. Lang
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642680410
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
No one has counted the enzymes in the human organism, and probably their profuse number can only be estimated from the restrictions the finite mass of genetic material imposes. Still, nu merous catalytic activities have been identified and investigated for their clinical relevance. After one century of such research, surprisingly, only a handful of enzymes has survived the stern trial of clinical application to find regular medical use. Dis regarding genetic defects, most of the diagnostically used en zymes participate in metabolic conversions fundamental to life: the utilization, transfer or fixation of vital nutrients or of cheJ,llical energy. Creatine kinase is central to the function of the mitochond rion, the cellular power generator. The wider distribution of this enzyme is linked to tissues whose physiology crucially relies on an adaptable supply of energy, notably skeletal muscle, the brain, and the heart. Just as these three tissues vary in their pre ference for different energy sources, each produces a different isoenzyme of creatine kinase. Accordingly, the finding of elevat ed creatine kinase activity in blood can lead to a variety of interpretations, but in practice the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction is the major consideration.
