Crack Propagation in Low-cycle Fatigue of Mild Steel

Crack Propagation in Low-cycle Fatigue of Mild Steel PDF Author: Stanley Theodore Rolfe

Book Description
An investigation was made of crack propagation in low-cycle fatigue of mild-steel plate specimens and has indicated that during crack propagation the type of loading cycle will affect markedly the fatigue behavior. Several types of reversed loading cycles have been included in the investi gation, namely constant load, reduced loads and constant stress. In the constant-load tests the stress increases throughout the test as the crack propagates, and the rate of crack propagation continuously increases. If the load range is reduced throughout a test (reduced-load test) so as to produce constant net-section stresses, the rate of crack growth will decrease throughout the test. (Author).

Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels

Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels PDF Author: Saurindranath Majumdar

Book Description
In a previous report, a fatigue crack propagation model was analyzed by considering fatigue crack propagation as a sequence of fatigue crack initiation events. This permitted correlation to be made between the fatigue crack growth resistance and low cycle fatigue properties of metals. Four steels were tested for low cycle fatigue behavior at the University of Illinois. Good correlation was obtained between the theoretically predicted crack propagation rate based on the measured low cycle fatigue properties of the four metals and experimentally observed crack propagation rates that were reported in the literature. Further, good estimates of crack propagation rates can be obtained on the basis of static tensile properties of the metals alone where cyclic properties are not available. (Author).

Correlation Between Fatigue Crack Propagation and Low Cycle Fatigue Properties

Correlation Between Fatigue Crack Propagation and Low Cycle Fatigue Properties PDF Author: Saurindranath Majumdar

Book Description
Fatigue crack propagation is treated as a succession of fatigue crack initiation events. The cyclic stress and strain experienced by each element ahead of the crack tip is computed by means of an elastic-plastic analysis of the crack tip region. The attendant cumulative fatigue damage is computed in terms of low cycle fatigue properties of the metal. This permits a correlation to be made between the fatigue crack propagation resistance of a metal and its resistance to fatigue as measured on smooth specimens. Fatigue crack propagation data for eight steels from Barsom's work are compared with predictions from the analysis using low cycle fatigue properties and values of rho* based on Gurland's study of the microstructural elements responsible for strengthening in steels.

Fatigue Failure of Metals

Fatigue Failure of Metals PDF Author: S. Kocanda

Book Description
The studies on the phenomena of fatigue in metals, and especially on the formation and growth rate of cracks have been conducted in 1972-1974 with continued intensity. Their results contribute to expanding our knowledge and give us a new insight into the sphere of metal fatigue which is a highly interdiscipline field. This makes the continuous amending and modifying of books on metal fatigue a necessity, unfortunately often related with the not easy task of changing one's opinions and critical analysis of established earlier notions. These aims were my chief concern when preparing the present edition of my book in which I made use of carefully selected new information from 1972-1973 and partly 1974 reports. This new matter has been included in many instances just to signal new facts or findings, since the limited space did not allow me to give them the amount of consideration they deserve. The book has been further supplemented with the results of micrographic studies conducted in co-operation with J. Kozubowski for which lowe him special thanks. I am also indebted to Mr. H. Mughrabi from Stuttgart for allowing me to publish in this book his very interesting micrographs of dislocation structures. Finally I should like to express my sincere thanks to Mr. E. Lepa for his concern in producing a good English translation of my book.

Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue of Metals

Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue of Metals PDF Author: M. Bílý
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483291715
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
An integral review is given in this book on the fatigue phenomenon covering the fundamentals of fatigue damage initiation, relevant factors influencing fatigue crack propagation and fatigue life, random load analysis, and simulation for theoretical and experimental fatigue life assessment. The entire chain of problems related to fatigue of metals and structural components is covered. Specifically, it describes the low-cycle plastic properties and statistically interprets the material stress reaction, examining original results of investigations on inelastic deformations under high cycle cyclic loading and correlating them with a number of use parameters. The limit states of bodies with primary defects and their resistance to fatigue crack propagation are discussed. Measurements, analysis and real-time modelling of operating loads for experimental fatigue life verification are reviewed as well as introducing some new fatigue damage accumulation hypotheses based on dissipated energy. Various operating and environmental factors of the fatigue life are analyzed, including temperature, metal structures, corrosive environment, stress-strain amplitudes and their changes, random load (strain) properties, stress gradient frequency, mean level, etc. The work is intended for all those involved in research and development in the metal, machine and structure fields.
