The period around parturition poses multiple threats to dairy cattle welfare. Dairy cows are at a high risk of metabolic and infectious disease within the first few weeks after calving. Additionally, dairy cows in many commercial dairies are housed in maternity pens which are designed for the ease of management. The design of maternity areas for human use has given little consideration to the expression of maternal behaviors. This thesis addresses two main themes that are currently missing from transition cow literature: 1) the impact of prepartum bedded-pack housing on transition cow health, and 2) using behavior to improve management and housing practices. Chapter 2 gives context to the two themes by providing an overview of current group housing practices for prepartum and parturient cows, peripartum health, and maternal behaviors. To address the first theme, Chapter 3 explores the relationship between prepartum bedded-pack housing and periparturient cow metabolic and infectious disease. Results suggest that increasing lying space from approximately 9.7 m2 to 19.4 m2 per cow in group maternity pens had minimal effects on cow health during the transition period, and providing a blind for cows to seek seclusion at calving did not negatively affect health outcomes. Chapters 4 and 5 address the second theme, and provide evidence that dairy cattle housed in indoor group maternity pens perform exploratory behavior and separate from other cows as calving approaches, and seek calving areas which offer additional coverage. Cows with less space allowance (approximately 9.7 m2 vs. 19.4 m2 per cow) were closer to other cows before and during calving, indicating that space restrictions may limit the ability to perform maternal behaviors. Additionally, length of stage II labor was shortest in pens with greater space allowance and a blind, providing some evidence that normal calving progression is influenced by the cows’ calving environment. Collectively, these results suggest a better understanding of parturient cow behavior can be used to improve housing; and provide initial data to understand the effects of group maternity pen housing on the health of peripartum dairy cows.
