Diplomacy and the Aristocracy as Patrons of Music and Theatre in the Europe of the Ancien Régime
Author: Iskrena Yordanova
Publisher: Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag
ISBN: 3990127705
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 894
Book Description
This volume explores the dense networks created by diplomatic relationships between European courts and aristocratic households in the early modern age, with the emphasis on celebratory events and the circulation of theatrical plots and practitioners promoted by political and diplomatic connections. The offices of plenipotentiary ministers were often outposts providing useful information about cultural life in foreign countries. Sometimes the artistic strategies defined through the exchanges of couriers were destined to leave a legacy in the history of arts, especially of music and theatre. Ministers favored or promoted careers, described or made pieces of repertoire available to new audiences, and even supported practitioners in their difficult travels by planning profitable tours. They stood behind extraordinary artists and protected many stage performers with their authority, while carefully observing and transmitting precious information about the cultural and musical life of the countries where they resided.

Book Description
-- ONE WRONG TURN. ONE RIGHT MAN. -- Colin. Rule-follower. Future doctor. Witness to murder. Captive. Taron. Survivalist. Mute. Murderer. Captor. Like every other weekend, Colin is on his way home from university, but he's taunted by the notion that he never takes risks in life and always follows the beaten path. On impulse, he decides to take a different route. Just this one time. What he doesn't realize is that it's the last time he has a choice. He ends up taking a detour into the darkest pit of horror, abducted by a silent, imposing man with a blood-stained axe. But what seems like his worst nightmare might just prove to be a path to the kind of freedom Colin never knew existed. Taron has lived alone for years. His land, his rules. He'd given up on company long ago. After all, attachment is a liability. He deals with his problems on his own, but the night he needs to dispose of an enemy, he ends up with a witness to his crime. The last thing Taron needs is a nuisance of a captive. Colin doesn't deserve death for setting foot on Taron's land, but keeping him isn't optimal either. It's only when he finds out the city boy is gay that an altogether different option arises. One that isn't right, yet tempts him every time Colin's pretty eyes glare at him from the cage. *"When Taron looped the heavy metal collar around the slender neck and closed the padlock, his body throbbed with the excitement of knowing he owned this boy.Was it wrong? Yes, yes it was.Was it so, so good? Definitely." Authority, Gender, and Midwifery in Early Modern Italy
Author: Jennifer F. Kosmin
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000174662
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
Authority, Gender, and Midwifery in Early Modern Italy: Contested Deliveries explores attempts by church, state, and medical authorities to regulate and professionalize the practice of midwifery in Italy from the late sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. Medical writers in this period devoted countless pages to investigating the secrets of women’s sexuality and the processes of generation. By the eighteenth century, male practitioners in Britain and France were even successfully advancing careers as male midwives. Yet, female midwives continued to manage the vast majority of all early modern births. An examination of developments in Italy, where male practitioners never made successful inroads into childbirth, brings into focus the complex social, religious, and political contexts that shaped the management of reproduction in early modern Europe. Authority, Gender, and Midwifery in Early Modern Italy argues that new institutional spaces to care for pregnant women and educate midwives in Italy during the eighteenth century were not strictly medical developments but rather socio-political responses both to long standing concerns about honor, shame, and illegitimacy, and contemporary unease about population growth and productivity. In so doing, this book complicates our understanding of such sites, situating them within a longer genealogy of institutional spaces in Italy aimed at regulating sexual morality and protecting female honor. It will be of interest to scholars of the history of medicine, religious history, social history, and Early Modern Italy.
