Book Description
Corridor offers a series of conceptually provocative readings that illuminate a hidden and surprising relationship between architectural space and modern American fiction. By paying close attention to fictional descriptions of some of modernity’s least remarkable structures, such as plumbing, ductwork, and airshafts, Kate Marshall discovers a rich network of connections between corridors and novels, one that also sheds new light on the nature of modern media. The corridor is the dominant organizational structure in modern architecture, yet its various functions are taken for granted, and it tends to disappear from view. But, as Marshall shows, even the most banal structures become strangely visible in the noisy communication systems of American fiction. By examining the link between modernist novels and corridors, Marshall demonstrates the ways architectural elements act as media. In a fresh look at the late naturalist fiction of the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s, she leads the reader through the fetus-clogged sewers of Manhattan Transfer to the corpse-choked furnaces of Native Son and reveals how these invisible spaces have a fascinating history in organizing the structure of modern persons. Portraying media as not only objects but processes, Marshall develops a new idiom for Americanist literary criticism, one that explains how media studies can inform our understanding of modernist literature.

Migrations, Volume III: Inward and Toward
Author: Ashim Shanker
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1387654160
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 720
Book Description
There were all these maddening permutations of what could be that were not to be ignored....Yet, there was also a stunning beauty to all of this that was so profound that one could not help but love every facet of every conceivability, whether realized or beyond reach. There was so much to capture even in stillness that was akin to grasping at grains of sand so fine as to elude the grip-it was all so intricate, so overwhelming and so rapid, and nothing ever ceased in its glorious transformation...There was an exhilaration in being engrossed in the details that evaded capture and in being oneself ensconced in constant flux so as to surrender without recourse to what was to come...There is no instance that ever becomes the destination, no circumstance the definitive possibility, and one, for that very fact, could scarcely help but be filled with a heartening love for all of creation...The Moment, after all, was Always and thus there was no 'before, ' no instance preceding the instance

Bruce Nauman
Author: Constance Lewallen
Publisher: University of California Press
ISBN: 0520296052
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
The first book devoted solely to Bruce Nauman’s corridors and other architectural installations, Bruce Nauman: Spatial Encounters deftly explores the significance of these works in the development of his singular art practice, examining them in the context of the period and in relation to other artists like Dan Graham, Robert Morris, Paul Kos, and James Turrell. Designed for viewer participation, Bruce Nauman’s architectural installations often confound expectations and induce physical and psychological unease. The essays in this book consider these works, which begin in 1969 and continue into the 1970s and beyond, in terms of the physical, perceptual, and psychological pressures they exert on the participant. Three interlocking perspectives on the topic—Constance M. Lewallen’s historical overview, Dore Bowen’s case study of Nauman’s 1970 Corridor Installation with Mirror—San Jose Installation (Double Wedge Corridor with Mirror), and a supplementary essay by Ted Mann on Nauman’s drawings—provide a comprehensive and in-depth approach. The book coincides with the major retrospective exhibition Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts at the Schaulager Museum, Basel, Switzerland (March 17–August 26, 2018) and the Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, New York (October 21, 2018–March 17, 2019).
