Book Description
Transition metal oxides form a series of compounds with a uniquely wide range of electronic properties. They have important applications as dielectrics, semiconductors, and metals, and as materials for magnetic and optical uses. The recent discovery of `high temperature' superconductors has brought the attention of a wide scientific community to this area and has highlighted the problems involved in trying to understand transition metal oxides. The present book is not primarily about Tc superconductors, although their main properties are discussed in the final sections. The main aim is to describe the varied electronic behaviour shown by transition metal oxides, and to discuss the different types of theoretical model that have been proposed to interpret it. It is intended to provide an introduction to this fascinating and difficult field, at a level suitable for graduate students and other research workers with a background in solid- state chemistry or physics.

Spectroscopic Study on Charge-Spin-Orbital Coupled Phenomena in Mott-Transition Oxides
Author: Masaki Uchida
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 4431542973
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 110
Book Description
In this thesis the author presents the results of extensive spectroscopy experiments beyond the bounds of each transition element to clarify the origins of characteristic spectral features and charge dynamics in charge-spin-orbital coupled phenomena in Mott-transition oxides. Several counterpart 3d transition-metal oxides were adopted as model systems suitable for examining the mechanisms involved, and their electronic structures were systematically investigated using three main spectroscopy methods. Comparative studies on the charge dynamics and Mott transition features of transition-metal oxides were performed: Charge dynamics and thermoelectricity in a typical Mott transition system La1−xSrxVO3, charge dynamics in a doped valence-bond solid system (Ti1−xVx)2O3 and in layered nickelates R2-xSrxNiO4 with charge-ordering instability are investigated thoroughly. The results obtained successfully provide a number of novel insights into the emergent phenomena near the Mott transition.

High-Temperature Superconductivity
Author: J. Ashkenazi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461533384
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 653
Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the University of Miami Workshop on the subject of "Electronic Structure and Mechanisms for High Temperature Super conductivity". The workshop was held at the James L. Knight Physics Building on the campus of the University of Miami, Coral Gables, 3-9 January 1991. Some 106 scientists from 12 countries attended this workshop, most of whom presented either invited or contributed papers. The reader will find in this volume a series of papers discussing the most im portant experimental and theoretical developments as of winter/spring 1990/1991. Despite more than four years of intensive research on high-T materials, there has c been considerable controversy both with respect to the interpretation of experiment and even more so in connection with the construction of an appropriate theory. In this regard, workshops such as this, gathering scientists with many viewpoints, and varying specialization, and fostering constructive discussions, are important in the de velopment of a common ground. Of major concern in the present context were the basic physical processes involved in high-temperature superconductivity.

Electron-Electron Correlation Effects in Low-Dimensional Conductors and Superconductors
Author: Alexandr A. Ovchinnikov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642767532
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 170
Book Description
Advances in the physics and chemistry of low-dimensional systems have been really magnificent in the last few decades. Hundreds of quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional systems have been synthesized and studied. The most popular representatives of quasi-one-dimensional materials are polyacethylenes CH [1] and conducting donor-acceptor molecular crystals TIF z TCNQ. Examples of quasi-two-dimensional systems are high temperature su perconductors (HTSC) based on copper oxides LA2CU04, YBa2Cu306+y and organic superconductors based on BEDT -TIP molecules. The properties of such one- and two-dimensional materials are not yet fully understood. On the one hand, the equations of motion of one-dimensional sys tems are rather simple, which facilitates rigorous solutions of model problems. On the other hand, manifestations of various interactions in one-dimensional systems are rather peculiar. This refers, in particular, to electron--electron and electron-phonon interactions. Even within the limit of a weak coupling con stant electron--electron correlations produce an energy gap in the spectrum of one-dimensional metals implying a Mott transition from metal to semiconductor state. In all these cases perturbation theory is inapplicable. Which is one of the main difficulties on the way towards a comprehensive theory of quasi-one-dimensional systems. - This meeting held at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kiev May 15-18 1990 was devoted to related problems. The papers selected for this volume are grouped into three sections.

Electronic Structure of Rare-Earth Nickelates from First-Principles
Author: Harrison LaBollita
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783031715471
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This thesis demonstrates the value of theoretical approaches in the discovery of new superconducting materials. It reports a detailed study of the recently discovered nickel-oxide (nickelate) superconductors using multiple first-principles computational tools, from density functional theory to dynamical mean field theory. In the context of superconductivity, discoveries have generally been linked to serendipitous experimental discovery; this thesis reports some of the few examples of predictions of new superconductors that have later been realized in practice, a prime example of the significance of the methodology it expounds. Overall, it represents a seminal systematic work in the electronic structure theory of the emergent field of nickelate superconductivity.
