Constant Envelope OFDM provides a solution to the issue of a high peak-to-average power ratio in OFDM by using angle modulation to transform the OFDM signal to a constant envelope signal. However, Constant Envelope OFDM is based on nonlinear angle modulation and therefore presents its own unique set of challenges. These challenges are studied in this dissertation and addressed through the application of signal reception, equalization and error correction coding techniques to enable robust Constant Envelope OFDM performance. The impact of the threshold effect on Constant Envelope OFDM is studied. More specifically, the impact of cycle slip noise, both due to the threshold effect and phase wrapping issues, on Constant Envelope OFDM performance is considered. A novel cycle slip mitigation technique is developed which results in significant threshold extension. Novel receivers for Constant Envelope OFDM are also developed which allow for a lower complexity receiver implementation. These receivers alleviate the need to employ a phase demodulator at the receiver also resulting in immunity from the threshold effect and phase wrapping issues. The performance of these linear receivers is studied in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath fading channels and they are shown to perform well compared to the conventional arctangent based receiver. In frequency selective fading channels, a frequency domain equalizer is applied to Constant Envelope OFDM and shown to provide good performance in all cases. Since the performance of the frequency domain equalizer depends on the quality of the channel estimate, the effect of the amplifier nonlinearities on the channel estimate is studied for the case of alternate channel estimation training symbols. Furthermore, the application of error correction coding to Constant Envelope OFDM is also studied for the alternate receivers in AWGN and multipath fading channels. Finally, the impact of narrowband interference on Constant Envelope OFDM is studied. A prediction error filter (PEF) is employed to mitigate the narrowband interference resulting in significant performance improvement at low signal to interference ratios.

The communication infrastructure is one of the biggest energy consumers in the world. With the expected exponential growth in the demand for wireless traffic, it becomes the foremost priority to make the communication systems energy-efficient. In this work, we will explore two energy efficiency enhancement techniques: Constant-Envelope modulation and Turbo coding. In Constant-envelope modulation, the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) signal is transformed into a constant-envelope phase modulated signal. Thus the PAPR of the signal reduces to 0 dB, enabling the power amplifiers at the transmitter to work at the energy-efficient operational point. The second technique known as Turbo coding, has been known to perform very close to the theoretical bounds. Thus when Turbo codes are applied on a modulation scheme, there is a significant improvement in bit-error-rate performance. Consequently, the number of retransmissions is decreased which helps to conserve power at the transmitter. In this thesis, we will explore the application of these two established techniques for the modulation schemes used in 3GPP LTE standards: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Single Carrier-Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA). We will also present their comparisons in terms of bit-error-rate and spectral efficiency.

Therefore, modulation techniques that can be employed in 5G and which can support the need for the increased capacity are investigated. In this thesis, modulation techniques CE-OFDM and CE-SC-FDMA are being investigated. Their bit error rate performance is compared. It is found that both systems have close bit error rate performance. A power amplifier is added to both systems and it is found that power amplifier has no impact on the performance. Furthermore, CE-OFDMA and CE-SC-FDMA are investigated and their bit error rate performance is found to be similar as well.

Continuous phase modulation~(CPM) is a non-linear, constant-envelope modulation scheme with memory, known for its bandwidth and power efficiency. Multi-h CPM uses multiple modulation indexes in successive symbol intervals to improve the error performance as compared to single-h CPM~(basic CPM that utilizes only a single modulation index). One of the major applications of multi-h CPM is in aeronautical telemetry systems. Modern aeronautical devices host an increasing number of sensors, which can transmit flight testing data to the ground station. However, this excess data transfer increases the intersymbol interference, and thus channel equalization is required at the receiver. The objective of our research is to propose low-complexity frqeuency-domain equalization~(FDE) techniques for multi-h CPM waveforms. For a modulation scheme with memory, such as CPM, the cyclic constraint on the FDE block necessitates the use of an extra segment of symbols, called intrafix or tail segment. We have used very simple geometric arguments to derive upper and lower bounds on the length of the intrafix in terms of the parameters of the modulation scheme and the Frobenius number. It is concluded that the length of the intrafix for multi-h CPM schemes is typically shorter than those required for single-h modulation schemes. We propose two receiver architectures; one uses a matched filter front end, while the other utilizes a fractional sampling front end. Various simplifications are proposed for each architecture, and the trade-off between receiver complexity and performance is analyzed and verified through detailed simulation studies.
