A focus on the everyday has produced this ethnography, which hopes to give a nuanced voice to an extended family of semi-sedentary nomads, living at the centre of a country and region known for its political turmoil, ecological insecurities, and socio-economic hardship. The everyday of the Chadian Walad Djifir is one in which sedentarity and mobility are approached as two entwined parts of a whole, and where economic and geographical boundaries do not necessarily form constrictions. The ferīkh (nomadic camp) is where all of the Walad Djifir’s networks meet, and often also begin— a physical place embodying various networks and connections, which span time and geographical space. This analytical and methodological approach gives insight in how regional trends can be understood in light of the Walad Djifir’s daily lives. Over time, the Walad Djifir have developed ways of coping and dealing with insecurities, interacting with infrastructural, technological, and socio-political developments in specific ways. In exploring how such insecurities and crises become anchored into the everyday, the ferīkh provides answers. It is precisely the mundane elements of daily life which anchor disruption.

Cette thèse a pour objet d'établir le lien entre la violence politique et les conflits internes et interétatique au Tchad de l'indépendance à nos jours (1960-2004). La violence politique en tant que violence d'Etat est à l'origine des conflits, des Présidents Tombalbaye à Déby. En réaction, elle génère une violence contre l'Etat, tantôt par le bas (révoltes, rébellions) tantôt par le haut (dissidences, mutineries, coups d'Etat). La violence politique atteint son paroxysme en 1979-80 avec la guerre civile. Cette guerre connaît une régionalisation et une internationalisation du conflit du fait de l'intervention militaire de la Libye et de la France à la demande des protagonistes tchadiens. L'OUA et la CD s'impliquent en faveur de la résolution de ces conflits; tandis que le différend tchado-libyen est réglé en 1994, le conflit interne reste entier sous les régimes Habré et Déby, en dépit des promesses de nouvelle gouvemance faites par ce dernier. La démocratisation de façade ne pennet pas, dans ces conditions, d'installer durablement la paix civile dans ce pays.

On the world map, macro-regions or global regions have gradually emerged, with varying degrees of success and following different trajectories. The authors of this book attempt to determine whether, within the context of globalization, these macro-regions have become an additional level in the spatial deployment of numerous actors, and whether they have come to stand between the national and global levels. This question has arisen because the increasing scales of trade, environmental problems, migration routes, energy distribution, the construction of major infrastructures etc. transcend national boundaries and are leading states to implement macro-regional cooperation. The authors ask whether these large regional groupings are becoming genuine territories and are the fruit of in-depth regional integration – economic, institutional, legal, normative, political, cultural and in terms of identity.
