Post-conflict Reconstruction and Development in Africa

Post-conflict Reconstruction and Development in Africa PDF Author: Theo Neethling
Publisher: Juta and Company (Pty) Ltd
ISBN: 1775820041
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
Some of the bloodiest conflicts occur on the African continent. An Afrocentric perspective is therefore a suitable starting point for research into the possible strategies for post-conflict peacebuilding. The authors of this book consider the problems around the concept of ‘post-conflict’ and the blurring of military and civilian roles, analysing the UN roles in the DRC and Sierra Leone, as well as the African Union Mission in Burundi. The main context of the book, however, is the South African Army’s strategy for PCRD in Africa, which was developed with the African Union’s 2006 Post-Conflict, Reconstruction and Development Needs Assessment Guide in mind. This book emanates from this plan. It therefore also explores South Africa’s policy imperatives to integrate development projects and peace missions, involving the military as well as civilian organisations. While this book is not intended as an instruction manual, it hopes to ignite an understanding of the particular processes required to develop a sustainable and cohesive post-conflict peacebuilding strategy within the African environment.

Caribbean Political Economy at the Crossroads

Caribbean Political Economy at the Crossroads PDF Author: D. Marshall
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230389864
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
There are a variety of crisis symptoms confronting the Commonwealth Caribbean as the 21st century dawns. Global changes are quickly rendering the region's traditional economic platform obsolete. This book suggests however that the expanding NAFTA or the hemispheric turn towards bloc formation can offer a way out for the Caribbean. Politics must be brought back into the regionalisation process, for each island government is witnessing the narrowing of the range of its state power by powerful TNCs, international financial institutions, Washington interests, and corporate-backed WTO commissions.

The Quest for Security in the Caribbean

The Quest for Security in the Caribbean PDF Author: Ivelaw L. Griffith
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317454960
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
This comprehensive work on security in the English-speaking Caribbean, offers a wealth of information about the history, politics, economics and geography of the entire region. The author examines security problems in the region as a geopolitical unit, not on a selective case-study basis, as is usually done. He assesses Caribbean security within a theoretical framework where four factors are critical: perceptions of the political elites; capabilities of the states; the geopolitics of the area; and the ideological orientations of the parties in power. Political and economic issues are judged to be as relevant to security as military factors. The author identifies safeguards which countries in the region may take in the coming decade.

Conflict, Peace, Security and Development

Conflict, Peace, Security and Development PDF Author: Helen Hintjens
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135012490
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
Whilst classical approaches linked development with peace, security has become central to understandings of both war and peacetime. This book uniquely reflects on how to deal with the convergence of war and peace in the context of global economic and geo-political development. It addresses methodological challenges in contemporary approaches to conflict, violence, security peace and development. Two dominant contemporary approaches are selected for debate on methodologies and ethical choices: rational choice and identity-based theorizing. The chapters are arranged as dialogues around contending approaches, to better understand how the inter-locking fields of violent conflict, peace, development and security can be researched and understood. The book considers how theoretical and methodological approaches relate to different ethical and political choices, including around engagement and intervention in the four interwoven fields. Theoretical, methodological and ethical issues emerge from the critical reviews of academic discourses and case-study based chapters from across the world, including Sri Lanka, Ghana, Colombia and Rwanda. This book is an invaluable resource for postgraduate students and researchers in Development Studies, Conflict Studies, Peace Studies and Security Studies.
