Workshops Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Intelligent Environments

Workshops Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Intelligent Environments PDF Author: M. Schneider
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1607504642
Category : Computers

Pages : 356

Book Description
Advances in the engineering of sensing and acting capabilities distributed in wide range of specialized devices is providing at last an opportunity for the fundamental advances that computer science achieved in the past few decades to make an impact in our daily lives. This technical confluence is matched by a unique historical context where users are better informed (more aware of the benefits that technology can provide) and production of more complex systems is becoming more affordable. Sensors/actuators deployed in an environment (in this context it can be any physical space like a house, office, classroom, car, street, etc.) facilitate a link between an automated decision-making system connected to that technologically enriched space. This computing empowered environment enables the provision of an intelligent environment, i.e., "a digital environment that proactively, but sensibly, supports people in their daily lives". This is an active area of research which is attracting an increasing number of professionals (in academia and industry) worldwide. The prestigious 5th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE'09) is focused on the development of advanced intelligent environments and stimulates the discussion on several specific topics which are crucial to the future of the area. As part of that five workshops were supported as part of IE'09. This volume is the combined proceedings of those five workshops: Workshop on Digital Object Memories (DOMe'09), Workshop on RFID Technology: concepts, practices & solutions (RFID'09), Workshop on Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Ambient Intelligence (AITAmI'09), Workshop on Ethical Design of Ambient Intelligence (EDAmI'09), Workshop on Smart Offices and Other Workplaces (SOOW'09).

Concurrent Engineering: Tools and Technologies for Mechanical System Design

Concurrent Engineering: Tools and Technologies for Mechanical System Design PDF Author: Edward J. Haug
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642781195
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 987

Book Description
These proceedings contain lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Concurrent Engineering Tools and Technologies for Mechanical System Design held in Iowa City, Iowa, 25 May -5 June, 1992. Lectures were presented by leaders from Europe and North America in disciplines contributing to the emerging international focus on Concurrent Engineering of mechanical systems. Participants in the Institute were specialists from throughout NATO in disciplines constituting Concurrent Engineering, many of whom presented contributed papers during the Institute and all of whom participated actively in discussions on technical aspects of the subject. The proceedings are organized into the following five parts: Part 1 Basic Concepts and Methods Part 2 Application Sectors Part 3 Manufacturing Part 4 Design Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization Part 5 Virtual Prototyping and Human Factors Each of the parts is comprised of papers that present state-of-the-art concepts and methods in fields contributing to Concurrent Engineering of mechanical systems. The lead-off papers in each part are based on invited lectures, followed by papers based on contributed presentations made by participants in the Institute.

Presentation Patterns

Presentation Patterns PDF Author: Neal Ford
Publisher: Addison-Wesley
ISBN: 013296337X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 555

Book Description
Presentation Patterns is the first book on presentations that categorizes and organizes the building blocks (or patterns) that you’ll need to communicate effectively using presentation tools like Keynote and PowerPoint. Patterns are like the lower-level steps found inside recipes; they are the techniques you must master to be considered a master chef or master presenter. You can use the patterns in this book to construct your own recipes for different contexts, such as business meetings, technical demonstrations, scientific expositions, and keynotes, just to name a few. Although there are no such things as antirecipes, this book shows you lots of antipatterns—things you should avoid doing in presentations. Modern presentation tools often encourage ineffective presentation techniques, but this book shows you how to avoid them. Each pattern is introduced with a memorable name, a definition, and a brief explanation of motivation. Readers learn where the pattern applies, the consequences of applying it, and how to apply it. The authors also identify critical antipatterns: clichés, fallacies, and design mistakes that cause presentations to disappoint. These problems are easy to avoid—once you know how. Presentation Patterns will help you Plan what you’ll say, who you’ll say it to, how long you’ll talk, and where you’ll present Perfectly calibrate your presentation to your audience Use the storyteller’s “narrative arc” to full advantage Strengthen your credibility—and avoid mistakes that hurt it Hone your message before you ever touch presentation software Incorporate visuals that support your message instead of hindering it Create highly effective “infodecks” that work when you’re not able to deliver a talk in person Construct slides that really communicate and avoid “Ant Fonts,” “Floodmarks,” “Alienating Artifacts,” and other errors Master 13 powerful techniques for delivering your presentation with power, authority, and clarity Whether you use this book as a handy reference or read it from start to finish, it will be a revelation: an entirely new language for systematically planning, creating, and delivering more powerful presentations. You’ll quickly find it indispensable—no matter what you’re presenting, who your audiences are, or what message you’re driving home.

Design Issues in CSCW

Design Issues in CSCW PDF Author: Duska Rosenberg
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447120299
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
One of the most significant developments in computing over the last ten years has been the growth of interest in computer based support for people working together. Recognition that much work done in offices is essentially group work has led to the emergence of a distinct subfield of computer science under the title Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Since the term was first coined in 1984, there has been growing awareness of the relevance to the field of, and the valuable con tributions to be made by, non-computing disciplines such as sociology, management science, social psychology and anthro pology. This volume addresses design issues in CSCW, an- since this topic crucially involves human as well as technical considerations - brings together researchers from such a broad range of disciplines. Most of the chapters in this volume were originally presented as papers at the one-day seminar, "Design Issues in CSCW", held at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), London, on 17 March 1992, one in aseries of DTI-supported CSCW SIG seminars. We would like to express our gratitude to the series editors, Colston Sanger and Dan Diaper, for their useful comments on, and suggestions for revisions to, the final draft of the manuscript; to Linda Schofield, our editor at Springer, for her continued encouragement throughout the preparation of the manuscript; and, finally, to our respective families for their support and patience over so many months.
