Concord and Its Points of Interest (Classic Reprint)

Concord and Its Points of Interest (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Geo Bacon
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330481745
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
Excerpt from Concord and Its Points of Interest The history of Concord as a city dates from 1853, for it was on the tenth of March in that year that the city charter was adopted, it having been granted July 6, 1849, and rejected three times by popular vote, finally being accepted by a majority of 269 in a total vote of 1387. The history of the parish and town is of deep interest but does not properly come within the scope of the present work, which deals especially with the Concord of today and may be considered as a sort of appendix to the complete, authoritative and admirable history of Concord from 1725 to 1853, written by the Rev. Nathaniel Bouton and published in 1856. This is a standard work whose value steadily increases with the passage of time, and we wish here to express our obligations to it for many of the facts presented in the introductory sketch, which by summarizing Concord's development in the past may lead to a more complete understanding of her probable growth in the future. The "History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties," published by J. W. Lewis & Co., of Philadelphia, in 1885, has also been of great service by reason of its clear presentation of facts concerning Concord's later history, and it is to be regretted that the necessarily high cost of that handsomely and substantially gotten up volume of nearly 1000 pages should prevent a copy of it from being owned by every family in the large and important section of which it treats so interestingly and accurately. The Concord Minute Men

The Concord Minute Men PDF Author: George Tolman

Book Description
Excerpt from The Concord Minute Men: Read Before the Concord Antiquarian Society, March 4, 1901 Dr. Clark was at that time just beginning his collection of American portraits, prints, autographs, etc., especially of those connected with the period of the Revolution, - or rather, he was just beginning to be known as a collector, for, 'as he told me, he had been from his boyhood addicted to picking up such things as he could find them, an easier thing to do then, and earlier, than it is now - and in the following years he got together a mass of such material, hardly equalled by any collection in the country, so large, indeed, that the catalogue com prised over numbers, and it took three days to dispose of them by auction. I think from watch ing a part of the sale that, considered merely as a money-making business, it would hardly have been possible for him to have invested in any recognized mercantile business the same money he put into this collection, in the same amounts and at the same times, and to have realized so great a profit from his investment. Book Description
Excerpt from Concord Authors at Home: Concord the Town Lord Amberly, Arthur Clough, Elizabeth Peabody, Julia Ward Howe, Harriet Martineau and the many kindred souls of that time. Could we go back to the days of the School of Philosophy and its meetings, when those enthusiastic but theoretical Transcendentalists held forth in the little chapel-like building on the Lexington Road, how true a picture would be ours of the Concord that has made for today.
