Book Description
One way to simplify the design of flexible and efficient MIMO transmission schemes is to view a MIMO transmitter as a concatenated coding and modulation system, in which conventional coding is applied before space-time coding/modulation. This concatenated coding structure allows a salient choice from a large number of conventional codes for SISO systems and simplifies the design of the inner space-time modulation. The structure is also general as it subsumes many existing space-time coding schemes as special cases. Based on the proposed general structure, a study on the effects of the inner space-time modulation on system performance is conducted. It is shown that well-known design criteria for space-time codes do not apply in a concatenated coding system. In fact, the design becomes much easier. Two MIMO transmission schemes are developed. The first is a simple delay-diversity scheme designed for optimized performance and the second scheme is a multi-layered MIMO transmission scheme aimed at applications that requires flexible tradeoff between performance and data rate. In addition, a joint iterative receiver is developed for the proposed concatenated transmission schemes. Simulation results are provided to show the merits of the proposed schemes.

Book Description
The high level of technical detail included in standards specifications can make it difficult to find the correlation between the standard specifications and the theoretical results. This book aims to cover both of these elements to give accessible information and support to readers. It explains the current and future trends on communication theory and shows how these developments are implemented in contemporary wireless communication standards. Examining modulation, coding and multiple access techniques, the book is divided into two major sections to cover these functions. The two-stage approach first treats the basics of modulation and coding theory before highlighting how these concepts are defined and implemented in modern wireless communication systems. Part 1 is devoted to the presentation of main L1 procedures and methods including modulation, coding, channel equalization and multiple access techniques. In Part 2, the uses of these procedures and methods in the wide range of wireless communication standards including WLAN, WiMax, WCDMA, HSPA, LTE and cdma2000 are considered. An essential study of the implementation of modulation and coding techniques in modern standards of wireless communication Bridges the gap between the modulation coding theory and the wireless communications standards material Divided into two parts to systematically tackle the topic - the first part develops techniques which are then applied and tailored to real world systems in the second part Covers special aspects of coding theory and how these can be effectively applied to improve the performance of wireless communications systems

Book Description
It is well understood that multiple antennas can be used to effectively combat the fading in wireless links and increase the channel capacity by exploiting the spatial diversity. This dissertation addresses two main techniques to approach the increased capacity: space-time coding/modulation and iterative decoding. For space-time coding we proposed a systematic and closed form construction of complex orthogonal space-time block codes of rates (k + 1)/(2 k) for 2 k or 2 k & minus; 1 transmit antennas, where k is any positive integer. The rates of our construction are the maximum rates for complex orthogonal designs without linear processing. Furthermore, another closed form construction is proposed when the number of transmit antennas is a multiple of 4, where the delay size is only half of the designs known previously. This dissertation also presented a new recursive space-time trellis codes design from differential encoding, which can be applied to serially concatenated system to achieve turbo gain through iterative decoding. We proposed a new design criterion to obtain the recursive trellis with larger error event length, which makes it possible to increase the performance by careful design of the STBC mapped to the states. By using the new criterion we developed a class of recursive space-time trellis with number of states M 2 for any size of constellation M. For the application of iterative decoding in MIMO system, we presented an iterative decoding/demodulation technique for an orthogonal space-time coded continuous-phase modulation system. By taking advantage of the orthogonal structure, the complexity of extrinsic information extraction can be significantly reduced at each iteration. We also investigated the concatenation of a low density generator matrix code as an outer encoder and a recursive space time trellis code as an inner coder to increase the system performance.

Book Description
Covering the full range of channel codes from the most conventional through to the most advanced, the second edition of Turbo Coding, Turbo Equalisation and Space-Time Coding is a self-contained reference on channel coding for wireless channels. The book commences with a historical perspective on the topic, which leads to two basic component codes, convolutional and block codes. It then moves on to turbo codes which exploit iterative decoding by using algorithms, such as the Maximum-A-Posteriori (MAP), Log-MAP and Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm (SOVA), comparing their performance. It also compares Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM), Turbo Trellis Coded Modulation (TTCM), Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) and Iterative BICM (BICM-ID) under various channel conditions. The horizon of the content is then extended to incorporate topics which have found their way into diverse standard systems. These include space-time block and trellis codes, as well as other Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) schemes and near-instantaneously Adaptive Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (AQAM). The book also elaborates on turbo equalisation by providing a detailed portrayal of recent advances in partial response modulation schemes using diverse channel codes. A radically new aspect for this second edition is the discussion of multi-level coding and sphere-packing schemes, Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts, as well as an introduction to the family of Generalized Low Density Parity Check codes. This new edition includes recent advances in near-capacity turbo-transceivers as well as new sections on multi-level coding schemes and of Generalized Low Density Parity Check codes Comparatively studies diverse channel coded and turbo detected systems to give all-inclusive information for researchers, engineers and students Details EXIT-chart based irregular transceiver designs Uses rich performance comparisons as well as diverse near-capacity design examples

Book Description
The capacity of wireless data communications is lagging behind demands due to unsatisfactory performance of the existing wireless networks, such as low data rates, low spectral efficiency and low quality of service. Space-time coding is an effective transmit diversity technique to combat fading in wireless communications. Space-time codes are a highly bandwidth-efficient approach to signalling within wireless communication that takes advantage of the spatial dimension by transmitting a number of data streams using multiple co-located antennas. There are various approaches to the coding structures, including space-time trellis coded modulation, space-time turbo codes and also layered architectures. The central issue in all these various coding structures is the exploitation of multipath effects in order to achieve very high spectral efficiencies. The spectral efficiencies of traditional wireless systems range between 1-5bps/sec/Hz but by using space-time techniques spectral efficiencies of 20-40bps/sec/Hz have been possible. Hence, space-time coding enables an increase in capacity by an order of magnitude. This is the main reason why space-time codes have been included in the standards for the third generation wireless communication systems and ultimately why Space-time Coding will be in great demand by individuals within industry and academia. The comprehensive understanding of space-time coding is essential in the implementation of 3G, and as the only title currently available, Space-Time Coding will be the standard text for Researchers, telecommunication engineers and network planners, academics and undergraduate/postgraduate students, telecommunications managers and consultants.

Robust Concatenated Codes for the Slow Rayleigh Fading Channel

Robust Concatenated Codes for the Slow Rayleigh Fading Channel PDF Author: Teh-Hsuan Hsu

Book Description
In this thesis, we design a robust concatenated code for the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system in the presence of slow Rayleigh fading with no channel side information at the transmitter (no CSIT) and perfect channel side information at the receiver (perfect CSIR). Since we are interested in the slow fading channel, outage capacity is used as the measure of performance. Good space-time codes can be designed so as to maximize the so-called rank and the determinant criteria. However, a practical system will concatenate a space-time code with an outer code at the transmitter and perform iterative decoding at the receiver. It is necessary to design the space-time code together with the outer code in practice. We will call this kind of code a concatenated space-time code. At the transmitter, we will consider the bit-to-symbol mapping and space-time code together as a space-time modulator and thus, Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) and Multilevel coding (ML) can be applied to design outer codes for the nonbinary constellation. However, the concatenated space-time codes designed by these two methods can only be decoded with arbitrarily small error probability for a fixed channel realization and such designs are not robust over the ensemble of fading channels. Our approach of designing concatenated space-time code is to design an outer code for a space-time modulator such that the concatenated space-time code can be decoded with arbitrarily small error probability in a set of fixed channels which have the same capacity. Through this approach, we discovered a new design criterion for spacetime codes: a good space-time code should stabilize its Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts. In other words, the robustness of a space-time code in the slow fading channel and its performance in iterative decoding can be visualized by the EXIT charts. The rank and the determinant criterion do not evaluate the performance of a space-time code in iterative decoding, but the new criterion does. Therefore, the new criterion is applicable to design concatenated space-time codes. Applying our approach and new criterion, a rate 7.2 bits/s/Hz concatenated space-time code is designed. The performance is close to the outage capacity, and the rate lost is 0.2 bits/s/Hz.
