Die GEFMA (German Facility Management Association), der Deutsche Verband für Facility Management, definiert Facility Management als: „Facility Management ist ein unternehmerischer Prozeß, der durch die Integration von Planung, Kontrolle und Bewirtschaftung bei Gebäuden, Anlagen und Einrichtungen (Facilities) und unter Berücksichtigung von Arbeitsplatz und Arbeitsumfeld eine verbesserte Nutzungsflexibilität, Arbeitsproduktivität und Kapitalrentabilität zum Ziel hat. Facilities werden als strategische Ressourcen in den unternehmerischen Gesamtprozeß integriert.“ 1 FM umfasst somit Sachmittel und Dienste, die erforderlich sind, um Mitarbeiter in ihrem Kerngeschäft zu unterstützen.
