L'étude du comportement des matériaux constitutifs d'une couverture de stockage de déchets doit être réalisée. Le principal matériau est l'argile de l'Aptien. Elle est remaniée, humidifiée et compactée pour garantir l'étanchéité de l'ouvrage. La démarche classique consiste à caractériser le comportement des matériaux en laboratoire et sur le site de l'ouvrage. Des essais conventionnelles (compression simple, essais triaxiaux) et non conventionnelles (traction directe, indirecte) en laboratoire ont été réalisées pour déterminer les paramètres importants. Une extension des résultats a été faite sur des essais de flexion et de soulèvement sur site. Une amélioration de comportement mécanique d'argile par des fibres a été visée. Les interprétations des résultats ont été faites pour optimiser la mise en œuvre des matériaux. Cependant les expériences en laboratoire ne sont pas suffisantes et difficiles à conduire. Une modélisation numérique par la MED a été envisagée. Les simulations ont été calibrées sur des essais utilisés pour les matériaux du sol. La difficulté réside dans la modélisation de l'argile qui peut être soumise simultanément à la traction et la compression (essai de flexion). La microstructure d'argile n'a pas été reproduite mais modéliser par un assemble de disques en contact. Plusieurs lois de contact ont été utilisées. L'influence des paramètres microscopiques du modèle sur le comportement macroscopique des échantillons a été étudiée. Une extension de ces résultats à la modélisation d'un essai de soulèvement de grande taille et in situ a été réalisée. Il s'agit là d'une première réponse au comportement réel de la couverture argileuse du site.
