This study was completed to analyze the grade point average of students who participate in athletics compared to the students who do not. The statistics for this research were from a suburban school district's 2015 graduating class of 393 students. Microsoft Excel and A Statistical Program (ASP) were used to analyze the data provided from Power School. A t-test was used to challenge the null hypothesis. The results showed that student athletes (3.28) have a significantly higher GPA in comparison to non-student athletes (2.98).

The data was collected from suburban districts in Missouri and Arizona. A Statistical Program (ASP) and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze and produce the data. A t-test was used to challenge the null hypothesis. The study proved that there is a significant difference in GPA between student-athletes and non-athlete-students. "Do student athletes have a higher GPA than non-athletes?", "Is there a significant difference in the grades of athletes and non-athletes?", and "What effects do athletics have on student's grades?" A t-test was used to challenge the null hypothesis. Findings from the study indicated that there was a significant difference in the GPA of athletes vs. non-athletes. The group of athletes was determined to have a higher GPA, averaging 3.25. The non-athletes averaged a GPA of 3.01, significantly lower than the athletes.

Overall, the athletes did not outscore non-athletes. There were consistent differences in mean scores in reading and mathematics based upon self-stated future educational goals where students maintained higher mean scores in reading and mathematics as their educational goals increased. In addition consistent differences in mean scores in reading and mathematics were indicated where students below the poverty level had lower mean scores than students at or above the poverty level. Finally, students' mathematics and reading achievement significantly increased as their self-reported weekly time spent on homework increased.

"The purpose of this project was to compare the academic performance of high school athletes vs. non-athletes using grade point average and ACT scores. Using information from the Kansas State Department of Education, as well as the Kansas State High School Activities Association, provides some answers to the following questions. "Is there a significant difference in the grade point averages of high school athletes vs. non-athletes?" "Is there a significant difference in ACT scores between high school athletes vs. non-athletes?" Using statistical software, a t-test was used to challenge the null hypothesis. Findings from the study indicated that there was a significant difference in grade point average and ACT scores between athletes and non-athletes. Among the 5,017 male athletes, 74% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 43% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Of the 3,674 male non-athletes, only 64% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only 34% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Among the 4,330 female athletes, 87% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 62% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Of the 5,547 female non-athletes, only 75% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only 44% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. In looking at ACT composite scores, athletes averaged a score of 22.94, while non-athletes averaged a score of 21.81."
