La sexualité du sujet âgé est soumis à des tabous sociétaux forts (ou ageism). Or loin d'être inexistante, elle persistait à tel point que chez les plus de 80 ans en bonne santé, environ 63% des hommes et 30% des femmes continuaient à avoir des relations sexuelles en 1988 aux Etats-Unis. Dans une étude espagnole plus récente de 2012, 62.3% des hommes et 37.4% des femmes de plus de 65 ans avaient une sexualité active. Il est plus difficile d'avoir des données en France ou plus récentes. Objectifs : L'objectif principal de cette étude était de faire décrire par des personnes âgées l'évolution de leur sexualité au cours de leur vie passée et actuelle. Les objectifs secondaires étaient d'identifier les difficultés relationnelles, physiques ou sociales pouvant amener à un arrêt de la sexualité et de découvrir s'il existait une idéalisation d'une sexualité antérieure. Matériel et méthode : Enquête qualitative par entretiens individuels semi-dirigés réalisés au domicile de personnes de plus de 70 ans recrutées sur volontariat dans l'Indre. Résultats : La sexualité de la jeunesse est ternie par le manque de connaissances et d'expérience. Puis la sexualité se stabilise avant d'arriver à un épanouissement vers la cinquantaine. Avec l'âge, la sexualité génitale diminue au profit de la tendresse. Les principaux facteurs influençant la sexualité au grand âge dans ce travail étaient la santé, l'aspect psychologique et les représentations liées à l'âge. En cela, ils étaient différents de ceux qui influençaient la sexualité plus jeune, où c'étaient les difficultés relationnelles qui amenaient à un arrêt de la sexualité. Aucune idéalisation de la sexualité antérieure ne semblait être présente. Conclusion : Chaque sexualité est unique et personnelle. Néanmoins une théorie d'évolution de la sexualité au cours de la vie est ressortie de ce travail. Un âge d'or sexuel existerait autour de la cinquantaine pour les hommes et pour les femmes. La sexualité diminuerait ensuite lentement après. On peut se poser la question de l'impact de l'ageism sur la sexualité au grand âge.
