Graciela
Author: Nicole Coffey Kellett
Publisher: University of New Mexico Press
ISBN: 0826363539
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 308
Book Description
"Graciela: One Woman's Story of War, Survival, and Perseverance in the Peruvian Andes chronicles the life of a Quechua-speaking Indigenous woman in the remote Andean highlands during the war in Peru that killed seventy thousand people and displaced hundreds of thousands more in the 1980s and 1990s. The book traces her early years as a young child living in an epicenter of violence to her contemporary life as a postwar survivor. Graciela Orihuela Rocha's history embodies the horrors, injustices, promises, and challenges faced by countless individuals who endured and survived the war. Her story provides intimate insights into deep-seated divisions within Peruvian society that center around skin color, gender, language, and ties to the land. These faulty lines--the result of colonial conquest--have endured to the present day, fostering discontent and violence in Peru. Through Graciela's story we not only learn of trauma and dehumanization but also resilience, strength, and perseverance. Hers is not only a story of war but also of the complex ways in which humans navigate connection, trust, and betrayal. Graciela's history provides insight into the systemic challenges of determining truth, implementing justice, and envisioning reconciliation in a country where calls for equality and justice remain unrealized for the most marginalized. Now more than ever, Graciela's story and thousands like hers must be told and understood" --

The Business of War
Author: James McCarty
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532641044
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 278
Book Description
The Business of War incisively interrogates the development and contemporary implications of the military-industrial complex. It exposes the moral dangers of life in neoliberal economies dependent upon war-making for their growth and brings the Christian tradition’s abundance of resources into conversation with this phenomenon. In doing so, the authors invite us to rethink the moral possibilities of Christian life in the present day with an eye toward faithful resistance to “the business of war” and its influence in every aspect of our lives. In combining biblical, historical, theological, and ethical analyses of “the business of war,” the authors invite us to better understand it as a new moral problem that demands a new, faithful response. With contributions from: Pamela Brubaker Stan Goff Christina McRorie Kara Slade Won Chul Shin David Swartz Jonathan Tran Myles Werntz Matthew Whelan Tobias Winright

Politics and the Past
Author: John Torpey
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
ISBN: 0585455066
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 327
Book Description
Politics and the Past offers an original, multidisciplinary exploration of the growing public controversy over reparations for historical injustices. Demonstrating that 'reparations politics' has become one of the most important features of international politics in recent years, the authors analyze why this is the case and show that reparations politics can be expected to be a major aspect of international affairs in coming years. In addition to broad theoretical and philosophical reflection, the book includes discussions of the politics of reparations in specific countries and regions, including the United States, France, Latin America, Japan, Canada, and Rwanda. The volume presents a nuanced, historically grounded, and critical perspective on the many campaigns for reparations currently afoot in a variety of contexts around the world. All readers working or teaching in the fields of transitional justice, the politics of memory, and social movements will find this book a rich and provocative contribution to this complex debate.
