Three Comedies (Classic Reprint)

Three Comedies (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Ludvig Holberg
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330483046
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Excerpt from Three Comedies In the following translations Holberg's meaning is given to the best of the translator's ability, without tenacious adherence to phrases or punctilious attention to words. A translator, like other persons, may be over-righteous. Holberg was born in Bergen in 1684, eleven years after the death of Moliere, and seven years after the birth of George Farquhar, the youngest of the so-called "Comic Dramatists of the Restoration," and he died in Copenhagen in 1754. He was a man of comprehensive intellect, and wrote several valuable and laborious works in addition to his thirty-three comedies. The edition of his comedies referred to in this book is Holbergs Komedier, udgivne af Julius Martensen, in 13 vols., Ernst Bojesen, Copenhagen, 1897. In the preface which he wrote (in French) to Fursman's French translation of some of his plays Holberg, explains briefly his views on comedy (xii. 256). Nowadays

Nowadays PDF Author: George Middleton
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331318593
Category : Drama

Book Description
Excerpt from Nowadays: A Contemporaneous Comedy There are obvious reasons why many plays are refused production, or fail to find ideal interpretation upon the stage for which every play should primarily be written. The demands and caprices, too, of our over-stimulated theater are such that financial success is not necessarily the indication of a play's merit, nor does financial failure, which may be likewise due to a variety of causes, imply that a play is unworthy. But the printed page, whether a play succeeds or fails, affords the dramatist some record of his endeavor. Through publication he renders his work accessible to those who may not have had the Opportunity of seeing it produced: through publication he makes his bold or futile bid for consideration in the dramatic literature of his time. As in Embers and Tradition, from several plays of which I have drawn the inspiration and suggestion of certain ideas and scenes, I have sought in Nowadays to reflect some spirit of the moment as expressed in the shifting standards of man and woman in relation to each other. My personal word to the reader would not be complete without a tribute to my wife, whose free spirit has gone into the making of this play. G. M. The Tempest

The Tempest PDF Author: William Shakespeare
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780260007278
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
The Tempest: A Comedy is a one of the many famous plays written by the well known English playwright, William Shakespeare. A poet, playwright, and actor, Shakespeare is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest writer in the English language. Frequently referred to as England's national poet, Shakespeare crafted thirty eight plays, two long narrative poems, and one hundred and fifty four sonnets in his lifetime. All of his plays, including The Tempest, have been translated into every major language and are consistently performed more often than plays by any other writer in the history of literature. In this play, Shakespeare examines magical elements not often seen in his other works as he crafts a world and characters that manipulate one another via magical means. The play centers around a father and daughter on an island and the father's attempt to ensnare the King Alonso of Naples into a political upheaval and a marriage between their children. While considered a comedy, this play draws heavily on romantic writings and is influenced by the tradition of tragicomedies. Through its use of illusion, manipulation, and the words of characters, this play has consistent reminders that it is just a play, or rather just another illusion of life. This tactic is one of the reasons that this play stands out to those familiar with Shakespeare's work as an interesting interpretation of play writing and the purpose of plays in the theater. The Tempest: A Comedy is a wonderfully executed play by the incomparable playwright, William Shakespeare. This is a wonderful read for individuals interested in Shakespeare and his work along with individuals with a distinct interest in English plays and theater. This book is bound to be exciting for students of drama, teachers of drama and literature, and playwrights wanting to learn from the best playwright known to man. For the sake of convenient handling the size of the original type page has here been reduced by approximately one - fifth. La Pierre de Touche

La Pierre de Touche PDF Author: Émile Augier

Category : Foreign Language Study

Pages : 180

Book Description
Excerpt from La Pierre De Touche: A Comedy Modern French playwrights commit another literary sin which stands in an odd paradoxical relation to the sin of preaching out of place. They deal, to sickening excess, with subjects and characters which, it is to be hoped, do not yet fill so large a space in French life as they do in French books. Let us take them at their word when they say that their purpose is to represent life as it really is. Are one-third of the women in France adventuresses? Certainly not; yet adventuresses make up about one-third of the number of female characters in modern French plays and novels. Is the subject of adultery and amorous in trigue the main occupation of French minds? Let us hope not; yet in these books there are scarcely more than two subjects seriously considered. The first, and chief one, is vice of this sort the second is the relation between the old nobility of blood and the new oligarchy of money. Funny Words in Plautine Comedy

Funny Words in Plautine Comedy PDF Author: Michael Fontaine
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195341449
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
Combining textual and literary evidence, this book argues that many Plautine jokes, puns, and names of characters were misunderstood in antiquity. By examining the comedian's tendency to make up and misuse words, Fontaine elucidates many new jokes and argues for a sophisticated, Hellenistic Plautus who wrote for a sophisticated Roman audience.
