Combinatorial Algebraic Topology

Combinatorial Algebraic Topology PDF Author: Dimitry Kozlov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540730514
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
This volume is the first comprehensive treatment of combinatorial algebraic topology in book form. The first part of the book constitutes a swift walk through the main tools of algebraic topology. Readers - graduate students and working mathematicians alike - will probably find particularly useful the second part, which contains an in-depth discussion of the major research techniques of combinatorial algebraic topology. Although applications are sprinkled throughout the second part, they are principal focus of the third part, which is entirely devoted to developing the topological structure theory for graph homomorphisms.

A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology

A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology PDF Author: J. P. May
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226511832
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
Algebraic topology is a basic part of modern mathematics, and some knowledge of this area is indispensable for any advanced work relating to geometry, including topology itself, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and Lie groups. This book provides a detailed treatment of algebraic topology both for teachers of the subject and for advanced graduate students in mathematics either specializing in this area or continuing on to other fields. J. Peter May's approach reflects the enormous internal developments within algebraic topology over the past several decades, most of which are largely unknown to mathematicians in other fields. But he also retains the classical presentations of various topics where appropriate. Most chapters end with problems that further explore and refine the concepts presented. The final four chapters provide sketches of substantial areas of algebraic topology that are normally omitted from introductory texts, and the book concludes with a list of suggested readings for those interested in delving further into the field.

Galois Theory of p-Extensions

Galois Theory of p-Extensions PDF Author: Helmut Koch
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662049678
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
Helmut Koch's classic is now available in English. Competently translated by Franz Lemmermeyer, it introduces the theory of pro-p groups and their cohomology. The book contains a postscript on the recent development of the field written by H. Koch and F. Lemmermeyer, along with many additional recent references.

Nevanlinna’s Theory of Value Distribution

Nevanlinna’s Theory of Value Distribution PDF Author: William Cherry
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662125900
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
This monograph serves as a self-contained introduction to Nevanlinna's theory of value distribution as well as a valuable reference for research specialists. Authors present, for the first time in book form, the most modern and refined versions of the Second Main Theorem with precise error terms, in both the geometric and logarithmic derivative based approaches. A unique feature of the monograph is its number theoretic digressions These special sections assume no background in number theory and explore the exciting interconnections between Nevanlinna theory and the theory of Diophantine approximation.

Nonstandard Analysis, Axiomatically

Nonstandard Analysis, Axiomatically PDF Author: Vladimir Kanovei
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 366208998X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 421

Book Description
In the aftermath of the discoveries in foundations of mathematiC's there was surprisingly little effect on mathematics as a whole. If one looks at stan dard textbooks in different mathematical disciplines, especially those closer to what is referred to as applied mathematics, there is little trace of those developments outside of mathematical logic and model theory. But it seems fair to say that there is a widespread conviction that the principles embodied in the Zermelo - Fraenkel theory with Choice (ZFC) are a correct description of the set theoretic underpinnings of mathematics. In most textbooks of the kind referred to above, there is, of course, no discussion of these matters, and set theory is assumed informally, although more advanced principles like Choice or sometimes Replacement are often mentioned explicitly. This implicitly fixes a point of view of the mathemat ical universe which is at odds with the results in foundations. For example most mathematicians still take it for granted that the real number system is uniquely determined up to isomorphism, which is a correct point of view as long as one does not accept to look at "unnatural" interpretations of the membership relation.

On Some Aspects of the Theory of Anosov Systems

On Some Aspects of the Theory of Anosov Systems PDF Author: Grigorii A. Margulis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662090708
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
The seminal 1970 Moscow thesis of Grigoriy A. Margulis, published for the first time. Entitled "On Some Aspects of the Theory of Anosov Systems", it uses ergodic theoretic techniques to study the distribution of periodic orbits of Anosov flows. The thesis introduces the "Margulis measure" and uses it to obtain a precise asymptotic formula for counting periodic orbits. This has an immediate application to counting closed geodesics on negatively curved manifolds. The thesis also contains asymptotic formulas for the number of lattice points on universal coverings of compact manifolds of negative curvature. The thesis is complemented by a survey by Richard Sharp, discussing more recent developments in the theory of periodic orbits for hyperbolic flows, including the results obtained in the light of Dolgopyat's breakthroughs on bounding transfer operators and rates of mixing.

Elementary and Analytic Theory of Algebraic Numbers

Elementary and Analytic Theory of Algebraic Numbers PDF Author: Wladyslaw Narkiewicz

Book Description
This book details the classical part of the theory of algebraic number theory, excluding class-field theory and its consequences. Coverage includes: ideal theory in rings of algebraic integers, p-adic fields and their finite extensions, ideles and adeles, zeta-functions, distribution of prime ideals, Abelian fields, the class-number of quadratic fields, and factorization problems. The book also features exercises and a list of open problems.

Class Field Theory

Class Field Theory PDF Author: Georges Gras
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662113236
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 517

Book Description
Global class field theory is a major achievement of algebraic number theory based on the functorial properties of the reciprocity map and the existence theorem. This book explores the consequences and the practical use of these results in detailed studies and illustrations of classical subjects. In the corrected second printing 2005, the author improves many details all through the book.
