Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Shear Flows

Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Shear Flows PDF Author: J.P. Bonnet
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401120986
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 504

Book Description
The existence and crucial role played by large-scale, organized motions in turbulent flows are now recognized by industrial, applied and fundamental researchers alike. It has become increasingly evident that coherent structures influence mixing, noise, vibration, heat transfer, drag, etc... The accelera tion of the development of both experimental and computational programs devoted to this topic has been evident at several recent international meet ings. One of the first questions which experimentalists or numerical analysts are faced with is: how can these structures be separated from the background turbulence? This is a nontrivial task because the coherent structures are gen erally embedded in a random field and the technique used to determine when and where certain structures are passing, or their averaged characteristics (in the more probable or dominant role sense) is directly related to the definition of the coherent structure. Several methods or approaches are available and the choice of a particular one is generally dependent on the desired informa tion. This choice depends not only on the definition of the structure, but also on the experimental and numerical capabilities available to the researcher.

Unsteady Combustor Physics

Unsteady Combustor Physics PDF Author: Tim C. Lieuwen
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139576836
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 427

Book Description
Developing clean, sustainable energy systems is a pre-eminent issue of our time. Most projections indicate that combustion-based energy conversion systems will continue to be the predominant approach for the majority of our energy usage. Unsteady combustor issues present the key challenge associated with the development of clean, high-efficiency combustion systems such as those used for power generation, heating or propulsion applications. This comprehensive study is unique, treating the subject in a systematic manner. Although this book focuses on unsteady combusting flows, it places particular emphasis on the system dynamics that occur at the intersection of the combustion, fluid mechanics and acoustic disciplines. Individuals with a background in fluid mechanics and combustion will find this book to be an incomparable study that synthesises these fields into a coherent understanding of the intrinsically unsteady processes in combustors.

Disorder and Mixing

Disorder and Mixing PDF Author: E. Guyon
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400928254
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
CARGESE INSTITUfE ON DISORDER AND MIXING Convection, diffusion and reaction are the three basic mechanisms in physico-chemical hydrodynamics and chemical engineering. Both convective and diffusive processes are strongly influenced by the effect of disorder of granular matter in porous media, suspensions, fluidized beds or/and by the randomness caused in turbulent flow field. This book has been initiated by a NATO summer institute held in Cargese (Corsica, FRANCE) from June 15 th to 27 th 1987 . Its aim was to associate statistical physicists, fluid mechanicians and specialists of chemical engineering on the problems of the relation between disorder and mixing and, in this respect, this is a " premiere ". This book is made of chapters based on lectures given in the meeting. However we have paid a considerable attention to harmonize the contents and styles of chapters made by scientists trained in different communities and using different languages and techniques to describe similar problems. The Prelude by the editors of the book introduces the different points and is a biased view of some of the important and most active aspects of the subjects developed. We wish to thank all contributors and students of the institute who gave the style of the present interdisciplinary approach. We also greatly thank Elisabeth Charlaix who has shared with us the scientific and practical organisation of the institute, and Marie-France Hanseler for her technical support.

Chemical Reactivity in Liquids

Chemical Reactivity in Liquids PDF Author: Michael Moreau
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461310237
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 617

Book Description
Understanding chemical reactivity has been the permanent concern of chemists from time immemorial. If we were able to understand it and express it quantitatively there would practically remain no unsolved mystery, and reactions would be fully predictable, with their products and rates and even side reactions. The beautiful developments of thermodynamics through the 19th century supplied us with the knowledge of the way a reactions progresses, and the statistical view initiated by Gibbs has progressively led to an unders tanding closer to the microscopic phenomena. But is was always evident to all that these advances still left our understanding of chemical reactivity far behind our empirical knowledge of the chemical reaction in its practically infinite variety. The advances of recent years in quantum chemistry and statistical mechanics, enhanced by the present availability of powerful and fast compu ters, are very fast changing this picture, and bringing us really close to a microscopic understanding of chemical equilibria, reaction rates, etc.... This is the reason why our Society encouraged a few years ago the initiative of Professor Savo Bratos who, with a group of French colleagues, prepared an impressive study on "Reactivite chimique en phase liquide", a prospective report which was jointly published by the Societe Fran

Book Description
This volume, published in honor of Prof. Luigi Crocco, appears when Luigi Crocco celebrates his 75th birthday of a life devoted to study, research, and teaching. The events in his life and World War II forced Luigi Crocco, as well as other Italian scientists, to look to foreign countries for the calm haven so vital to study. This notwithstanding, his scientific activity was never inter rupted, and this volume is an acknowledgment of scientists and researchers to his work and life.
