Book Description
The Pan-European Biological and Landscape Strategy (1996) aims to halt the degradation of landscape and biological diversity across the European region. Action Theme 2 of the Strategy relates to the integration of landscape and biological diversity into other sectors including transport. This Code of Practice contributes to this progress. The Code relates to linear transport systems, comprising roads, railways and inland navigation along waterways, such as canals and rivers. It aims to assist elected representatives, decision makers, and practitioners as well as nature conservation bodies in the understanding of the main issues and solutions associated with the planning, design and use of linear transportation networks i.e. roads, railways and inland navigation channels, in relation to the landscape and biological diversity. Other modes of transport are outside the scope of this CodeThe Code sets a political and social framework and proposes policy options for the development of new, and the maintenance of existing linear transport systems in relation to biological and landscape diversity. By building on examples, the Code has developed a series of Practice Pointers.

Annuaire Europeen 2000/European Yearbook 2000
Author: Francis Rosensteil
Publisher: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers
ISBN: 9789041118448
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1154
Book Description
The year 2000's most significant international event was, almost certainly, neither political nor military, but scientific - the announcement, in June, that the human genome had been almost totally decoded. Future generations may well see this as a major turning point, opening the way to radical changes in diagnosis, prognosis, and medical treatment. Often compared with the space programme, this vast enterprise still generates misgivings: this new power, which human beings now have, to modify the genetic heritage of living creatures raises fundamentally new ethical questions - and society as a whole will have to find the answers. In fact, the accelerating pace of scientific and technical progress seems to be reviving atavistic anxieties, some rational, others less so. Recent public-health crises, including the mad cow disease' scare, which lasted into 2000, have fuelled these fears. The public's rejection of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) - verging on a crusade in some countries - tells its own story. As regards conflict, 2000 saw the Middle East peace process grind to a halt, and the Intifada resume. In Europe, the situation in Kosovo and Chechnya, both the scenes of fighting in 1999, stayed precarious. Peace and democracy did score some successes, however, particularly in Europe: the centre-left's victory in Croatia, sweeping former President Tudjman's party off the scene, the democratic party's triumph in Bosnia, and the fall of the Milosevic regime in Serbia.

Book Description
This report looks at ways in which tax incentives may help to promote conservation of biological and landscape diversity in Europe. It outlines how tax incentives relate to other conservation policy options (Part I) before describing existing measures in and beyond Europe that directly benefit landholders (Part II) or create an enabling climate for the conservation sector (Part III). Part IV provides some indicators for the design of tax measures. Part V sets out conclusions and provides draft elements for a future recommendation to Council of Europe Member States on the development of fiscal incentive policies to support measures for biodiversity protection.

Book Description
Protected Areas in Europe - an Overview
Author: European Environment Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789292133290
Category : Biodiversity conservation
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
"Protected areas today cover a relatively large part of Europe, with almost 21% of the territory of EEA member countries and cooperating countries consisting of protected areas. In spite of this widespread presence of protected areas in all European countries, the topic has not received as much attention on a pan-European level as other environmental issues. We hope this report from the EEA--the first we have compiled on the subject--will go some way to redressing the balance. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of protected areas and aims to assist policymakers and the wider public in understanding the complexity of the current systems of protected areas. This report is especially timely, as 2012 marks the 20th anniversaries of the Convention on Biological Diversity and of the EU Habitats Directive. Both of these legal instruments consider protected areas to be key tools in the maintenance and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems. For the purposes of this report, a 'protected area' is any site with defined boundaries classified or designated by countries under legislation primarily aiming at nature conservation i.e. at the protection, management and restoration of species, habitats and ecosystems. A protected area can thus be any area of sea, lakes, rivers or land that has been identified as important for the conservation of nature, and managed for this purpose. It is important to recognise that protected areas differ greatly in the extent to which they limit human activity within their boundaries. Some protected areas allow industry, extensive agriculture or fishing to occur within their boundaries, while others prohibit all of these activities. The term is thus very broad in its application. The report covers all 32 countries that are members of the EEA--27 European Union Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey--as well as the seven cooperating countries--Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo under the UN Security Council Resolution 1244/99. The overseas protected areas of European countries are not considered in this report."--Publisher's description.
