The objective of the research was to evaluate the training effectiveness of two cockpit procedures training devices, differing greatly in their physical fidelity (and, consequently, cost), in the teaching of ground cockpit procedures for a twin-engine, turboprop, fixed wing aircraft. One group of students received training in cockpit procedures in a relatively expensive, sophisticated, high-fidelity, computerized cockpit procedures trainer, while another group were trained in an inexpensive, low-fidelity mockup of the aircraft cockpit. Their subsequent performance in the actual aircraft was compared with that of a control group who received all of their procedures training in the aircraft. Results indicated that both training devices produced significant transfer of training, in terms of error and time reduction, in performance in the actual aircraft. There were no significant differences in training effectiveness of the two devices, in spite of their great differences in physical fidelity and cost. Implications for the design of procedures training devices and associated training programs are discussed. (Author).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a prototype low cost cockpit procedures trainer (LCCPT) for the SH-3H aircraft. During Phase I of the study, pilots trained in the LCCPT were compared in subsequent SH-3H performance with a historical control group trained in Device 2C44, a much more expensive conventional cockpit procedures trainer. The LCCPT and 2C44 groups performed equally well in the SH-3H. For tasks practiced in the LCCPT, transfer of device training to SH-3H performance was 95 percent as estimated through a curve fitting technique. During Phase II, the adaptability of the LCCPT to student-directed instruction was evaluated. The students developed required levels of proficiency, and they appeared able to identify weaknesses in their performance and to direct their practice toward overcoming them.

Two prototype low-cost systems have been developed for air crew training. These systems provide instruction in cockpit procedures and various flight tasks at approximately one quarter the cost of conventional training approaches. Savings are estimated to be $1.5 million for one of the low-cost systems, a cockpit procedures trainer for the SH-3H aircraft; $3.2 million savings are estimated for the other low-cost system, a part task trainer for the EA-3B aircraft. This report discusses the cost-saving approaches and the acceptability and cost effectiveness associated with these two developments. Efforts to translate the low-cost approaches to several follow-on production systems are discussed. Research and development plans for further improving low-cost training technologies also are described.
