Ridgelands! The Closing of a Frontier

Ridgelands! The Closing of a Frontier PDF Author: Sherman Lewis
Publisher: Hayward Area Planning Association
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 474

Book Description
In 1950, the open space lands from Hayward to Pleasanton in California were privately owned and sprawl development was booming. By 2020, the frontier was closed, and almost all the shorelands and ridgelands in this large area were protected as public open space and by regulation. The land was saved by many advocates and these are their stories, many narratives sometimes parallel to each other, other times connecting, involving elections, referendums, litigation, bond measures, lobbying, organizing, and campaigns. Each story is simple enough, but taken together they add up to a long and complex history.

Opening and Closing

Opening and Closing PDF Author: Klapp
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521219235
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
In this original application of information theory to social analysis, Orrin Klapp examines how and why societies are producing more stress than they ever can handle. He argues that the reduction of 'social noise', the chaos from which we try to construct meaning is a major goal of individuals and groups alike. Individuals, groups, even entire societies normally cycle rhythmically between two basic modes of adaptation to the constant communication flow: opening, or scanning for desired information; and closing, or defending against noise. For example, in a society functioning in the opening mode, movements like ecumenicism and expansionism achieve momentum. Extreme reactions in either mode lead to an opposite swing, according to Professor Klapp's model. His wide-ranging conceptual scheme incorporates hypotheses about the variety and redundancy of information, as well as about human channel capacities and the need for homeostatis. His research reveals intriguing relationships among such phenomena as the concern about industrial population and the search for ethnic roots.

Book Description
"As restrictions on foreign funding for civil society continue to multiply around the world, Western public and private funders committed to supporting civil society development are diversifying and deepening their responses. Yet, as a result of continued internal divisions in outlook and approach, the international aid community is still struggling to define broader, collective approaches that match the depth and breadth of the problem"--Publisher's web site.

Joyride for Sale

Joyride for Sale PDF Author: Dennis Payton Knight
Publisher: Archway Publishing
ISBN: 1480807133
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
An eclectic collection, Joyride for Sale presents a compilation of short pieces from author Dennis Payton Knight. Some of the anecdotes are drawn from his experiences gathered during seventy years of living, while others are fictional exercises classified as fun and funny, and still others offer simple observations of the world. Knight tells stories about his adult life and of growing up in Laramie, Wyoming, recalling how he devoured coconuts to solve an engineering dilemma in his short career as a male belly dancer; how he dueled a mean, green-eyed girl at bumper cars; and how he created a whole new set of curse words. Joyride for Sale presents lively conversations about bands marching in tutus, jazz music, honeybees, and punching cows. Knight offers a collection of down-to-earth, wry, evocative, and optimistic narratives to help you ponder the meaning of life, celebrate the mysteries of space, and fall in love at least once a week.

Closing Costs

Closing Costs PDF Author: Dominic Dutra
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666711705
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 131

Book Description
For decades, many different denominations have experienced devastating declines in attendance, finances, and influence. Thousands of church leaders have watched their congregations grow older, smaller, and, in many cases, whiter than their surrounding communities. Rising costs and decreased giving make it virtually impossible to sustain the staff and fabric of these organizations--let alone their spiritual mission. But all hope is not lost. In a clarion call that demands death to bring new life, the local church is tasked with evaluating and ultimately sacrificing all its resources--including underutilized real estate--to bring healing and hope to the poor, marginalized, and disenfranchised. Decades of decline do not foretell the death of the church, and by reimagining their church spaces, congregations can experience revitalization as they grow to better embody their missional purpose.
