Duty, Honor, Country and Wisconsin PDF Author: Tom Mueller
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781457521645
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Nearly 27,000 men and women from Wisconsin have made the Ultimate Sacrifice in the nation's wars, from the Civil War to the two World Wars to Korea to Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. They are represented in "Duty, Honor, Country and Wisconsin" by several dozen men and women ranging from Oak Creek to Mayville and Beaver Dam to Menomonie to Sauk City / Prairie du Sac; and from Marshfield to Laona to Ettrick to Waupun; and from Dousman to Plover to Milwaukee. Author Tom Mueller has been reporting on this topic for three decades, and this is his fourth book. It includes more than two dozen who were lost in World War II, and two chapters about the 37 Wisconsin MIAs in Vietnam - the most extensive coverage of them as a group in decades, if not ever. Plus the stories of seven Civil War veterans who became Wisconsin governor, and some surprising details about Badger State men in World War I. And a review of the women who have made the Ultimate Sacrifice and how that has sharply increased in the last decade. The book also has interviews with more than three dozen veterans of wars ranging from World War II to Afghanistan.

Heavy Laden

Heavy Laden PDF Author: Larry M. Logue
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316999823
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
The psychological aftereffects of war are not just a modern-day plight. Following the Civil War, numerous soldiers returned with damaged bodies or damaged minds. Drawing on archival materials including digitized records for more than 70,000 white and African-American Union army recruits, newspaper reports, and census returns, Larry M. Logue and Peter Blanck uncover the diversity and severity of Civil War veterans' psychological distress. Their findings concerning the recognition of veterans' post-traumatic stress disorders, treatment programs, and suicide rates will inform current studies on how to effectively cope with this enduring disability in former soldiers. This compelling book brings to light the continued sacrifices of men who went to war.

Battlefield Atlas of Price's Missouri Expedition Of 1864

Battlefield Atlas of Price's Missouri Expedition Of 1864 PDF Author: Charles Collins
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781719088947
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
This 230 page atlas is divided into seven parts. Part I, Missouri's Divided Loyalties, and Part II, Missouri's Five Seasons, provide an overview of Missouri's history from the initial settlement of the Louisiana Purchase Territories through the opening years of the American Civil War. The remaining parts cover the Confederate plan, the Confederate movement into Missouri and the Union reaction, the Confederate retreat and Union pursuit into Kansas, and the final Confederate escape back into Arkansas. The atlas has a standard format with the map to left and the narrative to the right. Each narrative closes with two or more primary source vignettes. These vignettes provide an overview of the events shown on the map and discussed in the narrative from the perspective of persons who participated in the events. In most cases there are two vignettes with the first from a person loyal to the Union and the second from a person who supported the southern cause. A few narratives have two or more vignettes from only the Union side. This was done to emphasize disagreements and struggles among senior leaders to establish a common course of action. Map 25, Decision at the Little Blue River, is a good example and the three vignettes emphasize the disagreement between Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis and his subordinate, Maj. Gen. James Blunt on where to locate the Union defensive line.
