Book Description
Excerpt from Chronological Tables: A Synchronistic Arrangement of the Events of Ancient History In this work Ancient History is dealt with in the form of a chronological compendium, ranging from the received date of the Foundation of Rome to that of the Birth of Christ. The object is to give the reader a synoptic view, and so enable him to correct the narrowing tendencies of a study of Ancient History in isolated branches. Thus by the aid of Chronological Tables I - IV the classical student may see at a glance what political events in Palestine or the Eastern monarchies synchronized with those of Greek and Roman History. In Tables V, VI he may see what stage each country had reached at any given period in respect to science, legislation and literature. Exactness of date for these purposes is not necessary and is certainly unattainable. Every department of ancient Chronology has difficulties of its own, which remain to be dealt with by specialists, and until we approach the Christian era anything but approximate verification is at present impossible in perhaps the majority of cases. We have thought it best to adhere in the main to the by no means unexceptionable schemes of Chronology which have assumed a stereotyped form in our Dictionaries of Dates and popular educational works. Where an event is quite mythical or cannot even be approximately dated we have usually added the mark (?).
