Book Description
Excerpt from Chronicles of the Pilgrim Fathers The Brownist emigration, known to Americans as the "Sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers," was a little part of a great movement towards independence of judgment in spiritual affairs. The great movement began in the latter half of the sixteenth century in many parts of England. The little part of it which concerns us began in the early years of the seventeenth century in the country about the borders of the three counties of Nottingham, Lincoln and York. The Separatists were members of the lower and middle classes, who accepted the ruling of the Church of England in articles of faith, but refused her judgment in points of discipline. They held (in opposition to the Church) that the priesthood is not a distinct order, but an office temporarily conferred by the vote of the congregation. Their attitude and action have been thus described by one of their number: "They entered into covenant to walk with God and one with another, in the enjoyment of the Ordinances of God, according to the Primitive Patern in the Word of God. But finding by experience they could not peaceably enjoy their own liberty in their Native Country, without offence to others that were differently minded, they took up thoughts of removing." One party of them, under Pastor John Smyth, "removed" from Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire, to Amsterdam, in the year 1606. Another party organized in that year in the district of Scrooby, in Nottinghamshire, about ten miles west from Gainsborough, began to make itself obnoxious to the country authorities. This second party contained two prominent men, William Brewster, the chief layman, and John Robinson, one of the two ministers. The members of the party were accustomed to meet together "to worship God in their own manner." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Chronicles: Of the Pilgrim Fathers of the Colony of Plymouth, From 1602 to 1625 This volume will be found to contain an authentic History of the Pilgrim Fathers who planted the Colony of Plymouth, from their origin in John Robinson's congregation in 1602, to his death in 1625, written by themselves. Some account of the nature of these Chronicles, and of the circumstances which led to their compilation in this form, may not be unacceptable to the reader. It is well known to those who are familiar with the early history of New England, that William Bradford, the second governor of Plymouth, wrote a History of that People and Colony from 1602 to 1647, in 270 folio pages; which was used by Morton in compiling his Memorial, by Hutchinson in writing his History of Massachusetts, and by Prince in digesting his Annals of New England. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Pilgrim Fathers, 1606-1623 as Told By, Themselves, Their Friends, and Their Enemies: Edited From the Original d104s What a strange thing it is, that hitherto there does not exist any adequate account, scientifically written but popular in form, of the Pilgrim Fathers. And this, although there has already grown up around their noble efforts, a considerable literature, through the incessant efforts Of American Scholars and Historical Societies° a literature that will no doubt continue to grow till the end of time. Crammed as this volume is with information on the subject, most of it Of paramount authority; it has not been found possible to bring the Pilgrim Story in it, to a later date than 1623. If that Story is to be continued, it must be in another similar volume; which would probably carry it on to the years 1628, or 1630.
