Book Description
In October 1888, the Welsh-American explorer Henry Stanley started his African expedition to rescue the colonial governor Emin Pasha, whose colony in Eastern Sudan was burning with a revolt. Stanley's expedition was tired, and in search of food, he sent a couple of his team members to the closest village. They came back with a couple of locals, which sight was different from other African tribes. That was one of the first encounters with pigmees, an ancient African known from Homer's Illiad. The presented book is an accurate account of Stanley's travel into the depths of Africa and his discoveries.

Literary and Cultural Readings of Goddess Spirituality

Literary and Cultural Readings of Goddess Spirituality PDF Author: Anway Mukhopadhyay
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443855537
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
This volume explores the potentials of Goddess spirituality in the field of cultural critique, and strings together innovative readings of already existing literary texts and cultural phenomena from the critical perspective of Goddess spirituality. The chapters explore a colourful array of texts and authors, and focus on issues as diverse as the persistence of the figure of the Magna Mater in the life, writing and thought of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo, the inability of Advaita Vedanta to come out of the shadow of the Great Mother, the possibility of pluralizing the Eurocentric notion of the Muse by invoking the figure of Goddess Sarasvati in the field of English Studies, and a reappraisal of Kipling’s Kim from the perspective of the philosophical and spiritual discourses of Prajnaparamita, the Buddhist Goddess of Perfect Wisdom. The book also offers a comparative study of Minoan Goddess Spirituality and tantric philosophy with reference to Aphrodite, Diotima and the Indian Mother Goddesses, the possibility of simultaneously tantricizing notions of modernity and modernizing tantra itself with reference to the works of Lata Mani and William Schindler, and an investigation of the Mother-centric spiritual sensibilities in various religious discourses and devotional literatures, among other discussions. In short, this book investigates the possibilities of inserting the figure of the Great Mother into the critical domain of cultural pluralism, thereby celebrating a multiculturalism that is not based on violence and conflict (antagonism) but grounded in harmony. The Mother is seen by the discourse articulated here mainly as a middle ground between flesh and spirit, knowledge and passion, justice and compassion – and, in the red shadow of the Mother, social epistemologies and academic discourses are radically renegotiated.

The Akan Doctrine of God

The Akan Doctrine of God PDF Author: J.B. Danquah
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136971696
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 233

Book Description
First Published in 1968. Danquah's desire with this title is to expound Akan thought in such a way as to make it comprehensible to western thinkers and to demonstrate that it is comparable to their system. In pursuance of this objective, he calls forth his philosophical training and indulges in metaphysical and ethical speculation. The effects of this are evident in the whole book, whether in his discussion of the nature of the supreme Being or in his exposition of Akan ethical thought.

Psyche-Genetics

Psyche-Genetics PDF Author: S.W. Pringle
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 142590730X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 572

Book Description
Psyche-Genetics, as the title implies, is concerned with the intimate atomic relationship between the body and soul of MAN: It examines the on-going cycle of mankind’s social and spiritual evolution - from the infancy of our Stone Age, all the way to the end of our cycle as transcendental Cosmic sages in a future Age yet to come, when no more children will be born: It provides a unique portrait of all three Great Houses of MAN and the journey through Time and Space that we are taking. It tells us who we are; why we exist; and where we are going: It brings attention to the nuclear threat of the present moment and the great difficulty we are all having in letting go of the pseudo-intellectual teenage arguments and reckless gambles of a dying Steel Age.
