Chitrál Charlie
Author: N. S. Nash
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781848842762
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Charles Townshend achieved international fame, as a captain, when he commanded the besieged garrison at Chitral (now Pakistan) in 1895. As a result, he became known as 'Chitral Charlie'. Decorated by Queen Victoria and lionized by the British public, his passage up through the Army was assured and, in 1916, he was given command on 6th Indian Division and sent to Mesopotamia. Here he won a series of stunning victories as his ill-supported division swept all before it in a devastating advance up the River Tigris. He triumphed brilliantly at Kurna, Amara and Kut but then, against all the tenets of military common sense, he advanced up the River Tigris to take Baghdad. By now overreached, he was confronted by a determined Turkish foe. His Division was depleted and exhausted. Townshend withdrew to Kut, where he was besieged and forced into a humiliating surrender. The mistreatment of the British POWs by the Turks only added to Townshend's shame. This fascinating and objective biography examines Townshend's controversial conduct during and after the siege and assesses whether his dramatic fall from grace and popularity was fair.

Living Islam
Author: Magnus Marsden
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781139448376
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
Popular representations of Pakistan's North West Frontier have long featured simplistic images of tribal blood feuds, fanatical religion, and the seclusion of women. The rise to power of the radical Taliban regime in neighbouring Afghanistan enhanced the region's reputation as a place of anti-Western militancy. Magnus Marsden is an anthropologist who has immersed himself in the lives of the Frontier's villagers for more than ten years. His evocative study of the Chitral region challenges all these stereotypes. Through an exploration of the everyday experiences of both men and women, he shows that the life of a good Muslim in Chitral is above all a mindful life, enhanced by the creative force of poetry, dancing and critical debate. Challenging much that has been assumed about the Muslim world, this 2005 study makes a powerful contribution to the understanding of religion and politics both within and beyond the Muslim societies of southern Asia.

Chitral and Kafiristan
Author: Mohammad Afzal Khan
Publisher: Ishi Press
ISBN: 9784871875219
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 166
Book Description
The author is an officer who stayed for some time in Chitral and was a frequent visitor to the vastly publicized valleys of Kafiristan; which form however merely three small valleys of Chitral which is the main countryside and surrounds Kafiristan with a majority of Muslims of the Sunni and Ismaili sects. The writer extended his study to the whole of Chitral as he was captivated by an even more interesting and individualistic culture and historical background of the mainland. He found that in spite of poverty, superstition and continuous wars against foreign aggressors, the population presented a care-free and gay culture; full of zest for life and fond of sports like polo, shikar and fishing. Hospitality, peaceful co-existence with each other and the Kafirs and tough endurance of the hardy weather conditions and the isolation imposed on them by high Passes like the Lowari, Shandur and Dorah from the outside world emerge as their best qualities. He lived among them for a short duration but his study is deeply penetrating and undertaken by an inspiration which Chitral has always exercised on those who enter and leave it.

Understanding Kashmir and Kashmiris
Author: Christopher Snedden
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 1849046220
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
In 1846, the British created the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) - popularly called "Kashmir" - and then quickly sold this prized region to the wily and powerful Raja, Gulab Singh. Intriguingly, had they retained it, the India-Pakistan dispute over possession of the state may never have arisen, but Britain's concerns lay elsewhere -- expansionist Russia, beguiling Tibet and unstable China "circling" J&K -- and their agents played the 'Great Game' in Afghanistan and 'Turkistan'. Snedden contextualizes the geo-strategic and historical circumstances surrounding the British decision to relinquish prestigious 'Kashmir', and explains how they and four Dogra maharajas consolidated and controlled J&K subsequently. He details what comprised this diverse princely state with distant borders and disunified peoples and explains the Maharaja of J&K's controversial accession to India on 26 October 1947 - and its unintended consequences. Snedden weaves a compelling narrative that frames the Kashmir dispute, explains why it continues, and assesses what it means politically and administratively for the divided peoples of J&K and their undecided futures.
