More than thirty years ago the political turn that brought the dismantling of agricultural collectives and exclusive rights to small plots of farmland for rural families initiated a historic return to smallholding in the People’s Republic of China. Today, agriculture in China is changing again. In many villages smallholder farming is giving way to large agricultural enterprises. This book explores this latest transformation of Chinese agriculture. It traces how the peasantry’s frustration with the farming conditions, the priorities of national and local political agents and the changes in the management of collective land since the return to family-based farming have paved the way for a unique Chinese agrarian transition. The argument is based on careful analysis of agricultural politics since the early 1980s and data gathered in three field trips to Shandong, Sichuan, and Guizhou Provinces between 2008 and 2010. The findings highlight the importance of institutional path-dependencies and strategic government intervention (or its absence) for economic transformation. This book extends current research on the political economy of modern China, with particular regard to agricultural development and its role in economic transition. It uses Neoclassical principles to re-interpret agricultural growth and technological change under complex market institutions with empirical studies on China and selected East Asian economies. The text also questions how technological advances in China contribute to the Great Divergence debate. Through a comparative analysis of agricultural technical changes in the planting of rice paddies in Japan, Taiwan and China, Du finds that different market institutions and structures have given rise to considerable diversity of agricultural change between different economies in terms of the nature, timing and duration of technological transition. Such diversification has, in turn, affected the trajectories of agricultural and wider economic growth. Here, Du reflects on the nature of contemporary Chinese economic development and extends observations on agricultural transition to the entirety of Asia, finding that the nature, timing, and time-span of agriculture technology transitions have varied considerably across different economies.

This book explores the origins of agriculture in China. It includes archaeological data from the terminal Pleistocene to the early Holocene found in the Yellow and Yangzi River valleys, botanical data on wild millet and wild rice, data on palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments, and comparative ethnographic data. Lithic evidence indicates cultural continuity through this period, and archaeological discoveries illustrate that wild cereal exploitation was practised prior to the emergence of agriculture. As the dry and cold palaeoclimate forced prehistoric people to search for new sources of food, intensive cereal exploitation might have resulted in a sedentary way of life. Increasing population size triggered attempts to increase the productivity of food. It is also argued that the invention of pottery was prompted by the need to boil cereal grains. As cereals became staple foods, demands for increased production triggered cereal cultivation and domestication.
