Book Description
Excerpt from Chemistry and Metallurgy, as Applied to the Study and Practice of Dental Surgery The following pages were written at the suggestion of several eminent dentists, in whose judgment on all subjects pertaining to dentistry, and especially dental education, the author has the fullest confidence. It was their opinion that a work which should furnish a full account of the chemical principles involved in the various organic changes originating in the mouth, and of the behavior of the metals and other materials used in the workroom, was very much needed by their profession. Whether the present work supplies this demand is for the public to deter mine. It is manifest that such a book may be constructed upon one of two plans without losing sight of the original design. It may be adapted either to the wants of the student, who desires to get an enlarged view of the profession upon which he is entering, or it may be confined to those of the practical work man, who demands merely a guide to those manipulations which constitute the round of his daily duty. In the latter case, all that would be required is a brief state ment of those chemical facts which bear directly upon the manipulations alluded to. In the former, a much more extensive field is Opened to an author. He cannot, indeed, neglect those practical points, an acquaintance with which is so necessary to the mechanical dentist, but he must not confine himself to them. He must show the connection of this special study with the general science, and point out to the student how it touches the domain of physiological chemistry on the one hand, while, on the other. The Chemistry of Dental Materials (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Charles Stanley Gibson

Book Description
Excerpt from The Chemistry of Dental Materials The Chemistry of Dental Materials is largely based on notes of lectures dehyered to dental students in the Chemical Department of Guy's Hospital Medical School. To describe adequately the origin and properties of the large and continually increasing number' of materials available in dental practice would require a comprehensive dictionary, and I have thereforehtrieol to describe representative materials so as to make'the study of'the book an introduction to the more specialised literature. Further, I have assumed on the part of the reader only such a knowledge of chemistry and physics as is covered by the syllabus of the Preliminary Scientific Examination for the Licentiate in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. As far as possible, I have tried to emphasise the practical applications of the materials described, and I hope the book will be found specially useful by the student during his professional training in Dental Mechanics. At the same time it may serve to emphasise not only to the dental student, but also to the dental surgeon the im portance of obtaining as complete a knowledge as possible of the properties of materials Which are, or may be, available to assist in perfecting the healing art of dentistry. Book Description
Excerpt from Lecture-Notes on Chemistry for Dental Students: Including Dental Chemistry of Alloys, Amalgams, Etc., Such Portions of Organic and Physiological Chemistry as Have Practical Bearing on the Subject of Dentistry Matter has been divided into masses, molecules, atoms and electrons, and we are to study first the properties of these di visions. For purposes of present definitions it may be necessary only to consider that aggregations of electrons constitute atoms; groups of atoms make up the molecules; and numbers of mole cules held together by the physical force of cohesion form masses. The properties of these divisions of matter will constitute our further definition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
