Experiment 789 is a fixed-target experiment at Fermilab designed to study low-multiplicity decays of charm and beauty. During the 1991 run. E789 collected ā 109 events using an 800 GeV proton beam incident upon gold and beryllium targets. Analyses of these data include searches for b ā J/[psi]+[Chi] decays and [Alpha]- dependence measurements of neutral D meson production. Preliminary results from the 1991 run are presented in this paper.

Experiment 789 at Fermilab used the high-rate E605/E772 spectrometer to study low-multiplicity charm and beauty decays. Preliminary results on charm and beauty production are presented based on analysis of (almost equal to) 100% of the charm data and (almost equal to) 50% of the beauty data. A new experiment is proposed to improve charm and beauty sensitivity by several orders of magnitude.

The very high luminosities (ā1032cm/sup /minus/2/sec/sup /minus/1/) available in the Fermilab fixed target experimental areas offer immediate opportunities for producing large samples (>108 of B hadrons in individual experiments. The possibilities of accumulating large samples of B decays are limited by experimental techniques and trigger strategies and not by available luminosity. At the present time one experiment, E771, is approved to begin B physics experimentation and several other experimental possibilities are being discussed. Some of the problems and the potential of B experiments at fixed target energies as B factories are discussed.

The relevant photoproduction experiments in the search for charm at Fermilab are the broad band neutral beam experiments by a Columbia-Fermilab-Illinois (CFI) collaboration, the Tagged Photon Beam experiment by the TPS collaboration and the muon beam experiment with an active iron target by the Berkeley-Fermilab-Princeton (BFP) collaboration.

Recent analyses of charm spectroscopy from Fermilab fixed target experiment 687 are summarized. Emphasis is placed on the phenomenology of Cabibbo suppression in the meson sector. Such transitions have been observed in the semileptonic modes and hadronic modes. While the former transitions give us an opportunity to observe the weak current and the CKM matrix, a systematic comparison of the latter transitions allow us to study strong interaction effects, and possibly, light quark spectroscopy.
