The purpose of this research is to investigate the feeling of belonging that students may or may not have and the relationship of student sense of belonging to the overall academic achievement of a school. Students were surveyed on their sense of belonging in selected middle schools. The students scored themselves on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale, which revealed an overall mean score of belonging. Students from high-performing schools were compared to students from low-performing schools in regard to their sense of belonging. Additionally, teachers were asked to rate their perception of the students' sense of belonging. The teachers' scores were compared to the students' scores in both high- and low-performing schools. Lastly, teachers were asked to provide qualitative information about the schools' role in creating a sense of belonging. An extensive review of the literature regarding sense of belonging reveals support of the importance of sense of belonging in student achievement. There is also extensive evidence regarding variation of sense of belonging among minority groups and the important role of teachers in creating a sense of belonging for students. This study found that there is no significant difference in students' reported sense of belonging between high-performing schools and low-performing schools on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale. There is a significant difference between the teachers' perception of the students' sense of belonging and the students' reported sense of belonging on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scales. Teachers reported important roles in creating an environment of belonging. The qualitative data provided by teachers support evidence from the literature review indicative of schools with sense of belonging. High-performing schools do not report much information regarding discipline and routine as being important parts of creating belonging. However, low performing schools often report these as important to creating a sense of belonging for students. Implications of the research include: Teachers may not have an accurate understanding of students' sense of belonging and how to create a sense of belonging in schools. Further study should try to gain better understanding of the relationship between sense of belonging and minority status.

The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Student sense of belonging among adolescents has not been examined in an in-depth manner in the context of small learning communities (SLCs). This dissertation presents a qualitative study of high school students' sense of belonging at one urban high school recently redesigned into SLCs. Twenty-seven 9th and 11th grade students at Central High School were interviewed about four dimensions of belonging (power, meaning, value, and membership) the SLC reform should theoretically influence. Students compared their sense of belonging in the SLC context to their respective middle schools, a non-SLC context. In addition, students articulated the connection between belonging and academic achievement. The student sample used in this study represents a range of student characteristics with regard to gender, race, SLC and course marks. An emphasis of this study was on understanding the concept of belonging for low performing students as well as those passing their courses satisfactorily. The range of students expressed some differences in perspectives but shared many similarities in their opinions and attitudes regarding belonging. Students value supportive and personalized learning environments and evidence suggests SLCs provide this setting. The challenge remains in moving beyond personalization to providing students with challenging and meaningful content to increase and maintain student engagement and motivation, leading to improved academic achievement for all.

Newcomer students face unique linguistic and cultural obstacles during their educational transition. This population of students has historically been ignored and marginalized even with decades of research that link a sense of belonging to academic achievement and mental health. This study aimed to determine the newcomer student perspective on their sense of belonging and their relationships with peers, adults, and school programs. Schools must proactively learn more about their students to support the newcomer population better. The researcher conducted a mixed methods convergent parallel study to determine the perception of all newcomer students at X Middle School. Quantitative surveys and semi-structured interviews were collected, analyzed, and categorized into themes. Results showed that the newcomer population at X Middle School benefitted from the Newcomer and Two-Way Bilingual Immersion programs. The newcomer students also felt valued and respected by their teachers. The study also found that newcomer students face peer discrimination and a disconnection from school counselors. There is a need for more research to understand the newcomer population and the impact of a sense of belonging with this group of students. The study concluded that schools should reflect and improve systems that support all students, including newcomer students. Schools should create more welcoming schools, learn and understand how to support all newcomer students and establish both Newcomer and Two-Way Bilingual Immersion programs to better support newcomer students academically and mentally.

The TRIO Educational Talent Search is an educational opportunity program serving students in middle school through high school. It is meant to increase the number of students who are admitted to, enroll in, are retained by, and graduate from post-secondary degree programs. TRIO staff members provide voluntary enrichment activities for youth in their programs. Each program must identify the best practices that will motivate and prepare students to meet and reach difficult educational goals. This research study identifies best practices in fostering belonging and scholar identity among TRIO pre-college students. The data from this qualitative case study show separate but related results. The results focused on student relationships in their middle-school environment, as well as other characteristics of student scholar identities. The findings suggest that students seek a sense of belonging at school, but seeking this belonging can have negative repercussions. Furthermore, participant responses suggested that there are ways for educators to encourage student motivation to work on academics through concrete learning and choice. These findings lead to significant possible implications. Educators must address students' sense of belonging at school before they work to create a learning environment that fosters student motivation for academic learning. They can use tools such as experiential learning, choice, and real-world outcomes to foster student motivation for academic learning. If educators and programs work to address students' sense of belonging, and create learning environments that foster student motivation for academic learning, students will be better poised to develop a scholar identity.

A majority of institutions of Higher Education are seeking ways to provide environments that support student persistence in light of the overwhelming evidence of the impact of postsecondary degree attainment and life opportunities for individuals and communities. This study examines the relationships between student engagement, sense of belonging, identity, intersectionality, and student success indicators. For purposes of this study, 561 undergraduate students at a public regional institution provided demographic information, access to student success indicators, and completed a 47- question survey on student engagement and sense of belonging. Factor analysis determined five distinct dimensions of sense of belonging. Structure equation modeling suggests interactions with dimensions of sense of belonging and student engagement enable or inhibit each other and influence student success. In particular, students’ engagement was influenced by the level of sense of belonging they felt with other students and community as well as their sense of belonging with faculty and staff. In turn, time with faculty as well as engagement in activities related to the student’s academic major and minor influenced sense of belonging as well as student success indicators. Continued studies further exploring dimensions of belonging with diverse populations using the tenets of QuantCrit are recommended.
