Book Description
Excerpt from American Finance: With Chapters on Money and Banking The last four chapters, though not within the scope of our definition of Finance, are added because the popular conception of the term IS wider, and readers may expect to find some treatment of these matters in the work. The chapter on Money is an introduction to that on Banking, a subject possessing the deepest practical interest to all. In concluding this preface, it is a pleasure to ac knowledge my great indebtedness to Hon. Charles W. Stone, for several years a Member of Congress from the Twenty-seventh District of Pennsylvania, whose unfailing and prompt assistance has been excelled only by his um varying kindness in rendering it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory and History of Banking Eight of the chapters were printed in 1885 for the use of classes in Harvard University, but were not then given to the public. To these have now been added an introductory chapter, a chapter on com bined reserves or the system of Clearing House loan certificates, and one on the Bank of Amster dam. The whole has been revised and the notices of current history brought down to the present date, and the book is now laid before students and readers with the hope that it may aid in the sys tematic study of a subject, the treatment of which by writers upon economics is generally either too summary or too diffuse for ordinary purposes. Book Description
Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. It is believed that the addition of the complete text of the Federal Reserve Act (appendix) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Banking An explanation is needful concerning the origin and composition of this work. For several years letters have been received-by the publisher-of the Banker's Magazine inquiring whether a work like this existed. Other letters of inquiry have been received concerning the Banker's common-place Book, which, after the issue of several edi tions, went out of print. For a long period I have been trying to find an opportunity to embody the more important matters contained in that work, with additional information in a new form, but the desire to complete other undertakings resulted in the postponement of this until after my connection with the School of Finance and Economy in the University of Pennsylvania, when the need of the book for the purpose of instruction was so great that the prepara tion of it was begun. The work, therefore, has been prepared to serve a double purpose; first, for those in banks, and elsewhere, who wish to learn how the business of banking is conducted; and, secondly, for use as a text book for the students whom it is my pleasure to instruct. I have not aimed to produce an original work, but the best for the purposes mentioned. Accordingly, I have profited by the labor of others to a considerable extent, and it is fitting that I should acknowledge my indebtedness to them. In 1858 James S. Gibbons, Cashier of the Ocean Bank of New York, wrote a work on T fie Banks of New York, which ran through ten editions, and merited the favorable reception accorded to it. Changes, however, have occurred in banking methods since he wrote, while the style of Mr. Gibbons' work, though very lively and appropriate for the gen eral reader, is not suitable for a class-room book. Nevertheless, I have drawn very largely from that source in the preparation of Part I. And with much pleasure I acknowledge my indebtedness to this pioneer in describing the methods of conducting the business of banking. Aid has been derived from other sources. This has been acknowledged in various places, but additional mention may be properly made of several writers and sources of information. The more important sections of the Banker's common-place Book have been thoroughly revised and incorporated with other matter in Chapters VI. And VII and the essay entitled Suggestions to Young Cashiers on the Duties of their Profession, is given in the Appendix. Another portion of Chapter VII from pages 51 to 58, was written by George Walker, formerly Bank Commissioner of Massachusetts, and a banker of many years' experience, who has justly acquired the high reputation he enjoys as a financial writer on both sides of the Atlantic. Chapter XIV., on The Book keeper, has been prepared by S. R. Hopkins, who has happily joined an exceptionally valuable experience as an accountant in all its forms, private, corporate and municipal, with excellent facility for description. He has also prepared the last part of the work re lating to Trust Companies. The Chapter on Private Banking is from the pen of Eugene R. Leland, Of New York, formerly a banker in Wisconsin. Book Description
Excerpt from Stories of Banks and Bankers The following chapters are reprinted, with some additions and corrections, from a weekly paper. Written at intervals, and necessarily disconnected, their only claim to attention is the comparative novelty of the subject. The world at large hears much less about trading than about fighting-men, though there seems no reason whatever why banking, for example, should not be quite as interesting a pursuit as battling. At any rate, it may be pleaded in favour of the Stories of Banks and Bankers, that while scores of heavy volumes have been written about the dynasties of Schwarzburg Sondershausen and saxe-coburg-gotha, very little as yet is known about the no less. Book Description
Excerpt from Banks and Banking The connection between commercial crises and banking is of such an intimate character that the leading incidents of every important crisis have been given. Modern banking is so dependent upon the rate of interest which determines the profits of banks that it has been considered desirable to give a somewhat lengthened account of the causes of fluctuations in the value of money. The concluding chapters are devoted to incidents of modern practice, such as cheques, bills of exchange and the Opening of branch offices. The author hopes that the notes may be of some value to those candidates who are preparing for the Institute of Bankers' Examinations. Book Description
Excerpt from Readings in Money and Banking: Selected and Adapted Designed mainly for class room use in connection with one of the introductory manuals on the subject of Money and Banking or of Money and Currency, this volume, in itself, lays no claim to completeness. Where its use is contem plated the problems of emphasis and proportion are, accord ingly, to be solved by the selection of one or another of the available texts, or by the choice of supplementary lecture topics and materials. The contents of the introductory manuals are so divergent in character as to render possible combinations of text and readings that will include, it is hoped, matter of such range and variety as may be desired. Fullness of treatment has been attempted, however, in the chapters dealing with the important recent developments in the mechanism of exchange, and my aim has been through out to Select and, in many instances, to adapt with a view to meeting the wants of those who are interested chiefly in the modern phases of the subject.
