Changes in the Distribution of Income and the New Economic Model in Colombia

Changes in the Distribution of Income and the New Economic Model in Colombia PDF Author: Mauricio Cárdenas

Category : Business cycles
Languages : en
Pages : 78

Book Description
"This paper has analyzed the changes in the distribution of income in Colombia since 1976 using data for urban economy (seven largest metropolitan areas) and for the manufacturing sector. Evidence is shown that the structural reforms that took place in the early 1990s have been related to higher income concentration in Colombia, where levels of inequality were already impressively high. The results suggest that both trade liberalization and skill complementary technological change have a positive impact on skill premiums"--p. 5.

The New Economic Model in Latin America and Its Impact on Income Distribution and Poverty

The New Economic Model in Latin America and Its Impact on Income Distribution and Poverty PDF Author: Victor Bulmer-Thomas
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349245208
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
The economies of Latin America have undergone a deep process of change in the last decade as a result of the application of major reforms. The outcome can be fairly described as a New Economic Model. This New Economic Model is distinguished from its predecessor, in force before the 1980s debt crisis, by an emphasis on market forces and export-led growth. This book explores the main features of the New Economic Model in Latin America and, through analysis of the reform process and case studies, examines its impact on income distribution and poverty.

Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction in Colombia

Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction in Colombia PDF Author: Adriana Rocío Cardozo Silva
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9783631603864
Category : Colombia
Languages : en
Pages : 228

Book Description
This book analyses the distributional effects of economic growth on different dimensions of poverty in Colombia. It provides a microeconomic perspective on how economic growth affected poverty and inequality at the household level, as well as a macroeconomic perspective on the effects of growth on regional living standards. The study incorporates recent discussions on multidimensional analysis of well-being and goes beyond traditional income based measures, thereby contributing to the ongoing research on how to measure pro-poor growth and on the importance of incorporating different dimensions of well-being in convergence analysis.

ISBN: 1451954999
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 47

Book Description
This paper assesses the impact on the poor of the macroeconomic adjustment program undertaken in 1985-86. It finds that program-induced changes in production, employment, and real incomes have benefited the poor, while the adverse impact of program-induced price changes was modest and was largely cushioned by government policies. The paper describes the dimensions of poverty in Colombia, surveys government programs to alleviate poverty, and reviews the factors contributing to the improvement in the income distribution in recent years.

Relative Wages, Skill Shortages, and Changes in Income Distribution in Colombia

Relative Wages, Skill Shortages, and Changes in Income Distribution in Colombia PDF Author: Robert L. Slighton
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Income
Languages : en
Pages : 66

Book Description
An analysis is made of the income distribution relative to the economic growth in Colombia. Distribution of income in Colombia has been, and is, very unequal: 10 percent of the population of the large cities receives about half of the total personal income. This study examines the hypothesis that this inequality will widen if growth of the modern sector of the economy is retarded after the transition from agrarianism to the dual economy is begun. Colombia

Colombia PDF Author: International Monetary Fund. Western Hemisphere Dept.
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1513546260
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 103

Book Description
This Selected Issues paper addresses key areas that would contribute to maintaining macroeconomic stability and inclusive growth. Strong economic growth in Colombia has significantly reduced poverty, but has had limited impact on reducing inequality. Strong growth and social programs have helped reduce poverty. Going forward, efforts to further strengthen education, pension, and tax systems stand to yield important social gains, as recognized by the national development plan. Labor market distortions have declined in recent years, but challenges remain. The elimination of infrastructure gaps will also play a key role in sustaining strong and broad-based growth, and supporting further economic diversification.
