Book Description
Cargo Hold of Stars is an ode to the forgotten voyage of a forgotten people. Khal Torabully gives voice to the millions of indentured men and women, mostly from India and China, who were brought to Mauritius between 1849 and 1923. Many were transported overseas to other European colonies. Kept in close quarters in the ship's cargo hold, many died. Most never returned home. With Cargo Hold of Stars, Torabully introduces the concept of 'Coolitude' in a way that echoes Aimé Césaire's term 'Negritude, ' imbuing the term with dignity and pride, as well as a strong and resilient cultural identity and language. Stating that ordinary language was not equipped to bring to life the diverse voices of indenture, Torabully has developed a 'poetics of Coolitude' a new French, peppered with Mauritian Creole, wordplay, and neologisms--and always musical. The humor in these linguistic acrobatics serves to underscore the violence in which his poems are steeped. Deftly translated from the French by Nancy Naomi Carlson, Cargo Hold of Stars is the song of an uprooting, of the destruction and the reconstruction of the indentured laborer's identity. But it also celebrates setting down roots, as it conjures an ideal homeland of fraternity and reconciliation in which bodies, memories, stories, and languages mingle--a compelling odyssey that ultimately defines the essence of humankind.

ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 275
Book Description
About the Book Tales from a Distant Star is a short story anthology following a crew and their seemingly never-ending journey through space, which it very well could with the ever-expanding size of the universe. Using real science, the tales within stay as true as possible to the current understanding of space and space travel, and how it may look hundreds of years from now. Raymond Hardcastle’s years of studies in physics and engineering and his love for storytelling are now combined into one fascinating collection. About the Author Raymond Hardcastle spent his childhood in orphanages and foster homes until his teenage years, and attended one-room schoolhouses, where he would learn from the higher grades. He went on to take courses at vocational school to learn a trade. Until he was seventeen, he worked mowing lawns, shoveling snow, shining shoes, and as a store clerk until he could join the navy. At twenty-one, he was discharged and practiced his trade while attending college. He now holds a BS in physics and an MBA. He has worked as an engineer on a space shuttle and as an administrator of a scientific research laboratory, and taught technical college classes until his retirement.

Shadowed Stars: The Reign of the Black Guard Book Two in the Shadowed Stars sci-fi book series will allow you to follow the adventures of Josh Broody. A hero corrupted, turned villain, and back to hero as he is put on a path of redemption while the sins of his evil deeds haunt each new step he takes. He is a brother mentioned in prophecy to bring about the demise of the Dark Lord Epitaph by ending his brutal reign. With his brother Jase already killed, the prophecy seems broken, but he still finds himself pursued by the Black Guard, a most brutal and military regime wielded by Epitaph. He is also pursued by mercenaries and bounty hunters. His companion is Cody, from a wolfman-like race called Canians and a former victim to Josh’s own brutal hand. The two enemies have become friends. Along the way, they will meet other unexpected allies, and Josh’s heart will be torn between two women, Laylee and Tana. Conflicts with the Honsho Piracy will also produce a questionable ally in the famed Gold Gatling. Together, they will be pursued relentlessly as the mystery to the fact that the broken prophecy still seems to be played out and is not broken at all. Epitaph’s reign of power rests on the death of the two brothers. Jase is dead, and somehow Josh is still a threat. The adventure will span many worlds and systems, including dangerous foes like a mercenary that collects patchwork skin from his victims, and Josh’s former bride, now the bride of Epitaph and herself with a zombie side and a wrath of thirst to desperately quench with bloodshed and an agenda of her own. Can Josh Broody find love again and survive being hunted as his very existence could seal a prophecy and bring a tyrant down to restore freedom? Or will Epitaph kill Josh and anyone that assists him and further cement his domination in the universe? In the Shadowed Stars universe, the victory of heroes is not always a sure thing. Shadowed Stars is an epic tale with a more mature flavor.

Dragons in the Stars
Author: Jeffrey A. Carver
Publisher: Starstream Publications
ISBN: 1611385334
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 367
Book Description
Dragons in space? A preposterous legend. But when star pilot Jael defies an abusive ship’s master and rigs “the mountain route” through the hyperdimensional Flux, the dragons indeed appear—and challenge her to duel. If she escapes, she would be wise never to return. But the currents of the Flux are fickle, and when fate steers her this way again, she finds Highwing the dragon under sentence of death for the kindness he showed her. Only Jael can intervene—and so she must, for the sake of one who risked his life to save hers. A genre-bending novel of the Star Rigger Universe, from the Nebula-nominated author of Eternity’s End and The Chaos Chronicles. Original print publication by Tor Books. Also available in Dragon Space: A Star Rigger Omnibus. “Carver writes powerfully and clearly and has produced a book that is likely to find an audience among hard SF readers.” —Booklist “An interesting and entertaining blend of genres.” —Science Fiction Chronicle “Carver's prose effectively lends a spare yet evocative resonance to the draconian realm. Like a good stage performer, this story should leave its audience wanting more.” —John Bunnell, Amazing Stories

Handbook of Materials for Nanomedicine
Author: Vladimir Torchilin
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000067076
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 319
Book Description
In the fast-developing field of nanomedicine, a broad variety of materials have been used for the development of advanced delivery systems for drugs, genes, and diagnostic agents. With the recent breakthroughs in the field, we are witnessing a new age of disease management, which is governed by precise regulation of dosage and delivery. This book presents the advances in the use of polymeric nanomaterials for medical imaging, diagnosis, theranostics, and drug delivery. Beginning with the combinatorial approach for polymer design, it discusses star-shaped amphiphilic polymers, self-assembling polymer–drug conjugates, amphiphilic dendrimers, dendrimer nanohybrids, sustainable green polymeric nanoconstructs, chitosan-based nanogels, and multifunctional hybrid nanogels. The book provides all available information about these materials and describes in detail their advantages and disadvantages and the areas where they could be utilized successfully.
