Book Description
Rudolph, Frosty, and Captain Kangaroo is a memoir by Judy Gail Krasnow about her father, Hecky Krasnow, the producer of such classic children’s records and holiday tunes as “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “I’m Gettin’ Nuttin’ for Christmas,” “Peter Cottontail,” “Suzy Snowflake,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” “The Captain Kangaroo March,” “Smokey the Bear,” “Davy Crockett,” “Little Red Monkey,” and “The Little Engine That Could.” The book includes remembrances of Hecky Krasnow’s working relationships with such legendary artists as Gene Autry, Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore, Nina Simone, Art Carney, José Ferrer, Burl Ives, Arthur Godfrey, and Captain Kangaroo. In addition to his profound influence on the children’s record industry—an enormous business during the mid-twentieth century—Hecky also produced, wrote, or engineered such adult fare as Rosemary Clooney’s “Come On-a My House” and “Me and My Teddy Bear”; Nina Simone’s classic album The Amazing Nina Simone; and the landmark Chad Mitchell Trio debut, The Chad Mitchell Trio Arrives! Set against the dramatic backdrop of McCarthyism, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the birth of television and rock and roll, Rudolph, Frosty, and Captain Kangaroo is rich in anecdotes about the politics and history of the era, the stars Hecky produced, and an array of talented composers and conductors with whom Hecky collaborated, including Mitch Miller, Johnny Marks, Percy Faith, J. Fred Coots, Tommy Johnson, Sir Thomas Beecham, Rudolph Goehr, André Kostelanetz, and Arthur Fiedler.

Kids of New York

Kids of New York PDF Author: Anthony Colon
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN:
Category : Young Adult Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 213

Book Description
The author was born in the South Bronx in 1970, a time when chaos and despair wreaked havoc on the community, in a place where crime ruled the streets, where hope and poverty lived on the same side of the block. A young mother decided to take her baby boy and ran. She packed up and moved to a better place, a town called Springfield. It was a new home, where the butterflies hummed and the hummingbirds chirped to a new melody. The young boy lived his younger years in a state of bliss, that is until the dark clouds rolled in. The family fell on hard times. The author's biggest worries were where was the next meal coming from or how to stay warm in a frigid apartment. Times were tough, but the young boy kept his resolve and was undeterred by all the misery around him. He found a better place, a place inside himself. Even though everything around him was falling apart--including his family life, school, and friendships--he never faltered and kept his chin up. When you hit rock bottom, there is only one way to go: up. Like the saying goes, "Seven times down, eight times up." Throughout the years, the author was able to overcome great adversity and make a better life for himself. He has owned and operated several martial arts schools in the New York City area. The author also founded the Kids of New York, an organization which holds free events for city youth including breaking (breakdance) and martial arts. Hope is what gives us direction. Passion is the wings beneath are feet. Anything is possible despite the obstacles we may face. Just keep moving forward, and you will surely reach a better place. Karate, Anthony.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
The first biography of the beloved entertainer who broke the prime-time color barrier When The Flip Wilson Show debuted in 1970, black faces were still rare on television and black hosts nonexistent. Then came Flip—to instant acclaim. His show dueled Marcus Welby, M.D. for the top spot in the ratings. His characters and catchphrases fixed themselves in America’s consciousness, and he helped launch new talent, including Richard Pryor and George Carlin. But how did Clerow Wilson, a motherless Jersey City grade-school dropout, become the celebrity heralded on the cover of TIME as “TV’s First Black Superstar”? Drawing on interviews with family, friends, and celebrities, Kevin Cook offers an inspiring salute to a self-made star who fell from grace, but not before blazing a trail for generations of entertainers to come.
