The Japanese Economic and Social System
Author: Claude Lonien
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9781586033897
Category : Development economics
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
The Japanese economy is currently at a crossroads and the embarrassing situation the country faces today is even worse than the Meiji restoration of 1868, the defeat after World War II in 1945 and the yen appreciation after the Plaza Agreements of 1985. Indeed, the traditional Japanese model is doomed to failure, mainly due to economic and industrial structures that are inappropriate towards increasing globalization, liberalization and deregulation. However, Japanese-style industrial capitalism is in this work compared to the economic and social models of other developed countries and this enables us to point out the path the Japanese economy may take in the 21st century in order to survive.

Modernité en transit - Modernity in Transit
Author: Richard Dubé
Publisher: University of Ottawa Press
ISBN: 0776618814
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 441
Book Description

Averting a Great Divergence
Author: Peer Vries
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350121681
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
The most significant debate in global economic history over the past twenty years has dealt with the Great Divergence, the economic gap between different parts of the world. Thus far, this debate has focused on China, India and north-western Europe, particularly Great Britain. This book shifts the focus to ask how Japan became the only non-western county that managed, at least partially, to modernize its economy and start to industrialize in the 19th century. Using a range of empirical data, Peer Vries analyses the role of the state in Japan's economic growth from the Meiji Restoration to World War II, and asks whether Japan's economic success can be attributed to the rise of state power. Asserting that the state's involvement was fundamental in Japan's economic 'catching up', he demonstrates how this was built on legacies from the previous Tokugawa period. In this book, Vries deepens our understanding of the Great Divergence in global history by re-examining how Japan developed and modernized against the odds.
