No Tomorrow

No Tomorrow PDF Author: Vivant Denon
Publisher: New York Review of Books
ISBN: 1590173260
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 99

Book Description
A Bilingual New York Review Books Original Vivant Denon's No Tomorrow is one of the masterpieces of eighteenth-century French libertine literature, a book to set beside Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaisons dangereuses, except that where Laclos' icy novel tells of hellish depravity, Denon's ravishing novella is a paradisal diversion. This tale of seduction is itself a seduction, with a plot that could be said to slowly unveil itself before arriving at last at an unexpected consummation. Summoned by Madame de T—— to her country house, the young hero of Denon's novella is taken on a tour of the grounds, only the beginning of a night that not only will be full of unanticipated delights but will give rise to unforeseen, perhaps unanswerable, questions. Lydia Davis's definitive translation of Denon's slim masterpiece is accompanied by the French text. Peter Brooks's illuminating introduction explores the mysteries of No Tomorrow's original publication and the subtleties of Denon's ethics of pleasure.

Proofs from THE BOOK

Proofs from THE BOOK PDF Author: Martin Aigner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662223430
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
According to the great mathematician Paul Erdös, God maintains perfect mathematical proofs in The Book. This book presents the authors candidates for such "perfect proofs," those which contain brilliant ideas, clever connections, and wonderful observations, bringing new insight and surprising perspectives to problems from number theory, geometry, analysis, combinatorics, and graph theory. As a result, this book will be fun reading for anyone with an interest in mathematics.

Functions of Matrices

Functions of Matrices PDF Author: Nicholas J. Higham
Publisher: SIAM
ISBN: 0898716462
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 431

Book Description
“This superb book is timely and is written with great attention paid to detail, particularly in its referencing of the literature. The book has a wonderful blend of theory and code (MATLAB®) so will be useful both to nonexperts and to experts in the field.” — Alan Laub, Professor, University of California, Los Angeles The only book devoted exclusively to matrix functions, this research monograph gives a thorough treatment of the theory of matrix functions and numerical methods for computing them. The author's elegant presentation focuses on the equivalent definitions of f(A) via the Jordan canonical form, polynomial interpolation, and the Cauchy integral formula, and features an emphasis on results of practical interest and an extensive collection of problems and solutions. Functions of Matrices: Theory and Computation is more than just a monograph on matrix functions; its wide-ranging content—including an overview of applications, historical references, and miscellaneous results, tricks, and techniques with an f(A) connection—makes it useful as a general reference in numerical linear algebra.Other key features of the book include development of the theory of conditioning and properties of the Fréchet derivative; an emphasis on the Schur decomposition, the block Parlett recurrence, and judicious use of Padé approximants; the inclusion of new, unpublished research results and improved algorithms; a chapter devoted to the f(A)b problem; and a MATLAB® toolbox providing implementations of the key algorithms.Audience: This book is for specialists in numerical analysis and applied linear algebra as well as anyone wishing to learn about the theory of matrix functions and state of the art methods for computing them. It can be used for a graduate-level course on functions of matrices and is a suitable reference for an advanced course on applied or numerical linear algebra. It is also particularly well suited for self-study. Contents: List of Figures; List of Tables; Preface; Chapter 1: Theory of Matrix Functions; Chapter 2: Applications; Chapter 3: Conditioning; Chapter 4: Techniques for General Functions; Chapter 5: Matrix Sign Function; Chapter 6: Matrix Square Root; Chapter 7: Matrix pth Root; Chapter 8: The Polar Decomposition; Chapter 9: Schur-Parlett Algorithm; Chapter 10: Matrix Exponential; Chapter 11: Matrix Logarithm; Chapter 12: Matrix Cosine and Sine; Chapter 13: Function of Matrix Times Vector: f(A)b; Chapter 14: Miscellany; Appendix A: Notation; Appendix B: Background: Definitions and Useful Facts; Appendix C: Operation Counts; Appendix D: Matrix Function Toolbox; Appendix E: Solutions to Problems; Bibliography; Index.

The Mathematical Writings of Évariste Galois

The Mathematical Writings of Évariste Galois PDF Author: Évariste Galois
Publisher: European Mathematical Society
ISBN: 9783037191040
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
Before he died at the age of twenty, shot in a mysterious early-morning duel at the end of May 1832, Evariste Galois created mathematics that changed the direction of algebra. This book contains English translations of almost all the Galois material. The translations are presented alongside a new transcription of the original French and are enhanced by three levels of commentary. An introduction explains the context of Galois' work, the various publications in which it appears, and the vagaries of his manuscripts. Then there is a chapter in which the five mathematical articles published in his lifetime are reprinted. After that come the testamentary letter and the first memoir (in which Galois expounded on the ideas that led to Galois Theory), which are the most famous of the manuscripts. These are followed by the second memoir and other lesser known manuscripts. This book makes available to a wide mathematical and historical readership some of the most exciting mathematics of the first half of the nineteenth century, presented in its original form. The primary aim is to establish a text of what Galois wrote. The details of what he did, the proper evidence of his genius, deserve to be well understood and appreciated by mathematicians as well as historians of mathematics.

Norms of Word Association

Norms of Word Association PDF Author: Leo Postman
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483268632
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
Norms of Word Association contains a heterogeneous collection of word association norms. This book brings together nine sets of association norms that were collected independently at different times during a 15-year period. Each chapter is a self-contained unit. The order in which the norms are presented is arbitrary, although an attempt is made to group together norms that seem to belong together. The 1952 Minnesota norms are presented first, due to "age" and in recognition of the fact that a number of the norms that follow are direct outgrowths of this work. The next three norms in this collection are responses to the Russell-Jenkins stimuli obtained from subjects representing different linguistic communities. A summary of association norms collected from British and Australian subjects are reported along with association norms from German and French college students and French workmen. Four sets of norms that are not directly related to the 1952 Minnesota collection are included. The text will be of interest to historians and researchers in the field of verbal learning and verbal behavior.

Transform Analysis of Generalized Functions

Transform Analysis of Generalized Functions PDF Author: O.P. Misra
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080872301
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 347

Book Description
Transform Analysis of Generalized Functions concentrates on finite parts of integrals, generalized functions and distributions. It gives a unified treatment of the distributional setting with transform analysis, i.e. Fourier, Laplace, Stieltjes, Mellin, Hankel and Bessel Series.Included are accounts of applications of the theory of integral transforms in a distributional setting to the solution of problems arising in mathematical physics. Information on distributional solutions of differential, partial differential equations and integral equations is conveniently collected here. The volume will serve as introductory and reference material for those interested in analysis, applications, physics and engineering.
