En este libro se profundiza en la naturaleza y el alcance del estrés y del burnout en uno de los colectivos que mayor debate social está generando en la actualidad: los profesores de secundaria. Existe un amplio consenso entre los miembros de la comunidad científica interesados en el malestar laboral en que eloficio de enseñar en esta etapa educativa se ha visto envuelto en sucesivos yrecurrentes cambios que han motivado que el docente haya tenido que enfrentarse con nuevas actitudes, conductas, creencias y expectativas hacia su labor. Algunos de los profesores entrevistados en esta investigación señalan que, en ocasiones, su tarea está salpicada de sinsabores, las ilusiones tempranas dan paso al desencanto, la vocación se ve mutilada por el choque con la realidad delas aulas, y el optimismo muda en pesimismo. En sus diarios y cartas también emergen otros porqués del malestar laboral: los alumnos ocupan mucho "espacio psicológico" (el rebelde de la cuarta fila, el apático y ausente de la segunda,el que siempre está riendo, el tímido, el que sabe la respuesta pero nunca levanta la manoà), los padres son percibidos como más exigentes, los colegas másdistantes, los alumnos más conflictivos; además, aumenta la sensación de sentirse "chivos expiatorios" de los males del sistema educativo.
