The Modern Review
Heirs to World Culture
Author: M.H.T. Sutedja-LIem
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004253513
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 547
Book Description
This volume brings together new scholarship by Indonesian and non-Indonesian scholars on Indonesia’s cultural history from 1950-1965. During the new nation’s first decade and a half, Indonesia’s links with the world and its sense of nationhood were vigorously negotiated on the cultural front. Indonesia used cultural networks of the time, including those of the Cold War, to announce itself on the world stage. International links, post-colonial aspirations and nationalistic fervour interacted to produce a thriving cultural and intellectual life at home. Essays discuss the exchange of artists, intellectuals, writing and ideas between Indonesia and various countries; the development of cultural networks; and ways these networks interacted with and influenced cultural expression and discourse in Indonesia. With contributions by Keith Foulcher, Liesbeth Dolk, Hairus Salim HS, Tony Day, Budiawan, Maya H.T. Liem, Jennifer Lindsay, Els Bogaerts, Melani Budianta, Choirotun Chisaan, I Nyoman Darma Putra, Barbara Hatley, Marije Plomp, Irawati Durban Ardjo, Rhoma Dwi Aria Yuliantri and Michael Bodden.

Indonesia: Regional Conflicts and State Terror
Author: Mieke Kooistra
Publisher: Minority Rights Group
ISBN: 1897693931
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
Indonesia is a state torn by vicious and prolonged conflicts which, over recent years, have claimed tens of thousands of lives and left nearly a million people displaced. Diverse as they are, these conflicts are sustained and exacerbated by a set of common factors including the role of the state’s army, the extreme development gap between the island of Java and most of the outer regions, the effect of the government’s policy of transmigrasi (forced migration), and its political manipulation of religion. This Report gives the historical background to the current conflicts, starting with an overview of the recent history of Indonesia. It then focuses on two of the main conflicts, in Aceh and Maluku, highlighting the factors that provoke and prolong the bloodshed. The Report ends with a look at the current reforms and a discussion of the many issues facing Indonesia today. The Report also offers a set of recommendations aimed at supporting peaceful solutions and respect for the human rights of all the population.

A History of Christianity in Indonesia
Author: Jan Sihar Aritonang
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900417026X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 1021
Book Description
Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.

Urban Symbolism
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004609997
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
This volume deals with a hitherto largely neglected aspect of cities, namely the symbolic and ritual structure in which the urban community is rooted. This fascinating facet is explored in a combined effort by social anthropologists, sociologists, historians and philologists for cities like Jakarta, Padang, Bangkok, Beijing, Tokyo, Baghdad, Kathmandu, Lucknow, Francistown, Vitoria and Buenos Aires. Three perspectives on the study of symbolism in the urban arena are developed, namely the material, cultural and structural point of view. This results in a series of new concepts for comparative use and provides lively descriptions suffused by rich detail of the social processes by which urban symbols and rituals are constituted.

The United Nations and the Indonesian Takeover of West Papua, 1962-1969
Author: John Saltford
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 070071751X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
This book examines the role of the international community in the handover of the Dutch colony of West Papua/Irian Jaya to Indonesia in the 1960s and questions whether or not the West Papuan people ever genuinely exercised the right to self-determination guaranteed to them in the UN-brokered Dutch/Indonesian agreement of 1962. Indonesian, Dutch, US, Soviet, Australian and British involvement is discussed, but particular emphasis is given to the central part played by the United Nations in the implementation of this agreement. As guarantor, the UN temporarily took over the territory's administration from the Dutch before transferring control to Indonesia in 1963. After five years of Indonesian rule, a UN team returned to West Papua to monitor and endorse a controversial act of self-determination that resulted in a unanimous vote by 1022 Papuan 'representatives' to reject independence. Despite this, the issue is still very much alive today as a crisis-hit Indonesia faces continued armed rebellion and growing calls for freedom in West Papua.
