Book Description
Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, Vol. 7 The' enlightened and independent Governor of Virginia, Henry A. Wise, has added to his claims on our respect by his strenuous opposition to dangerous theories on free trade in money, which were likely to receive support from certain members of the legislature. On the plea that the existing laws against usury were detrimental to the public interests, it was contemplated to abolish them, or at least to relax their force, by allowing higher premiums on the loan of money. Book Description
Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, Vol. 2 And youth in its rashness and inexperience often at tempts what is impracticable, and indulges dreams which no wise man could wish to see realized. Age has no right to do wrong, and I admit that there are old men who have profited little even in the hard school of experience, and who are devoured by an insane ambition or an insatiable avarice long after they have outlived every other passion, and when they have one foot already in t e grave. Yet, Old men for counsel and young men for war, remains as one of those precious maxims in which is condensed the wisdom of mankind. The young prince who, on coming to the throne, dismisses the experienced counsellors Of his wise father, and surrounds himself with advisers of his own age, is generally regarded as on the high-road to the ruin of himself, if not of his kingdom. Sometimes, in deed, we find a marvellous young man, wise beyond his years; but ordinarily the wise head is not found on young shoulders. But, Uncle Jack, you forget that the youth of our gene ration have advantages which those Of former generations had not. Book Description
Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, Vol. 3 M.-gratry has here attempted a work of the highest importance, and much needed to meet the moral and intel lectual wants of 'our times. NO higher subject 'than God can occupy our thoughts, and no knowledge can compare, in dignity, interest, and value, with the knowledge of God. Indeed, as without God there is nothing, for all things are by him, in him, and for him, 'so without knowledge of him there is no knowledge at all. He who knows not God knows nothing, and hence the deep si nificance of the Holy Scripture which calls him a fool w o denies God, Diwit insipiens in cards suo, non est Deus. The highest wisdom is to know God, and the supreme good is to now and love him. The greatest service, therefore, which can be rendered to genuine science and to mankind, is to fur nish solid instruction as to the means and conditions of the knowled e and love of God, and to stimulate men to seek him as t e first good and the first fair. Book Description
Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, 1858, Vol. 6 I am glad, interposed De Bonneville, to find that France is still monarchical, and I prefer the Empire to the Republic. If Henri Cinq were on the throne instead of Napoleon, I should find no serious fault with the Imperial government or its general policy. My objection to Louis Napoleon is, that he is a usurper, and not the legitimate sovereign of France. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, 1848, Vol. 2 It is conceded that your ministers have written several able and learned works against unbelief, and in defence of religion but in these works they have only borrowed Catholic princi ples and arguments, conclusive when urged by us, but of no practical value when urged by them, because practically denied and refuted by their position outside of the Church, and by the other principles and arguments they must adopt and urge in their own defence. Actions speak louder than words. The rebel chief, in arms to overthrow his lawful sovereign, cannot preach loyalty with much efi'ect. His practical disloyalty more than neutralizes his speculative loyalty. The practical rejection of Catholicity by your ministers necessarily does more to spread infidelity and licentiousness than any Catholic principles and arguments they may urge can do to arrest their fatal progress. It is certain, and the experience of three hundred years has proved it, that Christianity is defensible only on Catholic ground, and every attempt to defend it on other grounds has failed. Philosophers have tried to defend it on philosophical grounds, but in doing so have only reduced it to a philosophy. Rationalists have attempted to do it on the ground of reason alone, and have obtained only the same result. Socialists andddmom'tiom to Protestants.
