Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Browning My object has been to introduce Brown ing to those to whom he is little more than a name, and to give them samples of the intellectual wealth which that name re presents. And if any are led by these Studies to interest themselves in this greatest poet of the last century, it will be to me a source of gratification and a cause for sincere thankfulness. Book Description
Excerpt from Browning Studies These Browning Studies were given in Oberlin College, in the Department of English in the course on Nineteenth Century Poetry, in the second semester of the year 1908-09, and were repeated in the corresponding semester of the year1909-10. They constituted a course in the Summer Session of Middlebury College in 1913, and were given here again as a part of the study of Nineteenth Century Poetry in the second semester of the year 1913-14. It should be explained also that the greater part of the study of The Ring and the Book was written before those Oberlin days, and that since those days Bishop Blougram's Apology, A Death in the Desert, and Reverie have been added to the list of poems taken up; also that, besides being used in connection with the college classes mentioned above, several of the lectures have been given in various places. The interest taken by the students in these studies has suggested their publication. They are now printed as given in the classroom, with some revision. Abbreviations are written out more than in the author's notes, but no attempt has been made to reproduce the extemporaneous elaboration and explanation given in the classroom. Lectures which occupied several classroom hours are here sometimes combined into a single chapter. These studies do not pretend to be exhaustive. They are simply an introduction to some of Browning's best work. They are intended now, as they were in the classroom, for those who have not read Browning at all before, or very little. Book Description
Excerpt from Browning and His Century Prologue To Robert Browning "Say not we know but rather that we love, And so we know enough." Thus deeply spoke The Sage; and in men's stunted hearts awoke A haunting fear, for fain arc they to prove Their life, their God, with yeas and nays that move The mind's uncertain flow. Then fierce outbroke, - Knowledge, the child of pain shall we revoke? The guide wherewith men climb to things above? Nay. calm your fears! 'Tis but the mere mind's knowing, The soul's alone the poet worthy deeming. Let mind up-build its entities of seeming With toil and tears! The toil is but for showing How much there lacks of truth. Book Description
Excerpt from Stories From Browning These studies are in no sense meant to be a substitute for the poems they sketch. They are intended for a stimulus and a help; and if, to any degree, they succeed in introducing the reader to Browning himself and in clearing away the cryptic and esoteric atmosphere which too much surrounds the conception of his genius in the popular mind, they have not been written in vain.
