Book Description
The last of the Renaissance humanists, Bonaventura Vulcanius, is still a mysterious figure, even though he left a correspondence, at least two Alba amicorum, and a collection of books and manuscripts. Born in Bruges in 1538, the son of a disciple of Erasmus, he spent the troubled decades of 1560 and 1570 in wanderings before his appointment in 1581 as a Professor for Greek and Latin Letters at the University of Leiden. He edited and translated many a rare text, composed dictionaries, sent laudatory poems, and compiled the first chapters of a history of Germanic languages. This volume gathers recent research on this versatile philologist, and includes the first edition of many unpublished works and documents. Contributors are Karel Bostoen, Hélène Cazes, Thomas M. Conley, Harm-Jan van Dam, Hugues Daussy, Kees Dekker, Jeanine de Landtsheer, Alfons Dewitte, Toon van Hal, Chris L. Heesakkers, Wilhelmina G. Heesakkers-Kamerbeek, Jeltine Ledegang-Keegstra, G.A.C. van der Lem, Kees Meerhoff, Dirk van Miert, Kasper van Ommen, Paul J. Smith and Gilbert Tournoy.

Receptions of Hellenism in Early Modern Europe

Receptions of Hellenism in Early Modern Europe PDF Author: Natasha Constantinidou
Publisher: Brill's Studies in Intellectua
ISBN: 9789004343856
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 561

Book Description
This volume, edited by Natasha Constantinidou and Han Lamers, investigates modes of receiving and responding to Greeks, Greece, and Greek in early modern Europe (15th-17th centuries). The book's 17 detailed studies illuminate the reception of Greek culture (the classical, Byzantine, and even post-Byzantine traditions), the Greek language (ancient, vernacular, and 'humanist'), as well as the people claiming, or being assigned, Greek identities during this period in different geographical and cultural contexts. 0Discussing subjects as diverse as, for example, Greek studies and the Reformation, artistic interchange between Greek East and Latin West, networks of communication in the Greek diaspora, and the ramifications of Greek antiquarianism, the book aims at encouraging a more concerted debate about the role of Hellenism in early modern Europe that goes beyond disciplinary boundaries, and opening ways towards a more over-arching understanding of this multifaceted cultural phenomenon. 0.

Book Description
Christian's long reign (1588-1648) saw Denmark reduced from a major to a second-rate power, and in response he sought to portray the country as a powerful, rich, and culturally refined monarchy with long and glorious traditions. Skovgaard-Petersen examines the Latin histories of Denmark by Johannes Pontanus (1571-1639) and Johannes Meursius (1579-1639) as part of that endeavor. The study is revised from her 1998 doctoral dissertation for the University of Bergen. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
