Book Description
This Selected Issues paper analyzes the challenges for the Spanish pension system. Spain’s population, like those in many other advanced economies, is projected to age over the coming decades. Although projections are uncertain, the simple fact is that Spain’s aging and shrinking population has put and will continue to put relentless pressure on contributory pension finances. The reforms adopted in 2011 and 2013 if fully implemented will ensure the financial viability of the contributory pension system. A package of reforms could include parametric changes such as automatically linking the retirement age to changes in life expectancy and adjusting accrual rates and the calculation of pensionable earnings.

Book Description
This technical note assesses the vulnerabilities of household and corporate sector balance sheets and quantifies the potential impacts from macroeconomic shocks using sensitivity and contingent claims analyses. The note analyzes the risks to the Spanish financial stability arising from household indebtedness. The analysis expands the use of microlevel data to assess household vulnerabilities, distinguishing between indebted and nonindebted households as well as accounting for the allocation of debt, debt service burden, and households’ income and assets.

Book Description
This paper analyzes economic developments in El Salvador during 1990–97. The paper assesses the prospects of the Salvadoran economy in facing the new challenges coming from its reinsertion into the global economy. The paper describes the evolution of trade competitiveness and evaluates the divergence from equilibrium of the real effective exchange rate. It concludes that the exchange rate behavior in the last decade appears to have followed roughly the path predicted by a long-term equilibrium exchange rate model consistent with a current account deficit of about 2 percent of GDP.
