Bluetongue in Northern Europe PDF Author: Claude Saegerman

Book Description
Bluetongue (BT) is an infectious, viral and vector-borne disease of improved breeds of sheep and some species of deer that is of major international importance. The infection is usually unapparent in cattle, which acts as reservoir for the virus. However, some serotypes such as serotype 8 (BTV-8), which recently caused a severe epizootic of BT in northern Europe, exhibit a more important virulence in cattle. Consequently, the redaction of a scientific booklet describing Bluetongue is of great utility for veterinarians and animal health professionals in the framework of an early detection of Bluetongue and other emerging diseases.

Book Description
The third volume in the Institute of Animal Health (IAH) Biology of Animal Infections Series, Bluetongue discusses one of the most economically important diseases of domesticated livestock. Affecting primarily sheep particularly the improved mutton and wool breeds, it is now endemic in Africa, India, the Middle and Far East, Australia and the Americas, and over the last six years has caused a series of outbreaks throughout the Mediterranean region and central Europe. Bluetongue represent a paradigm not only for the other orbiviruses (such as African horse sickness virus, which shares the same vector species) but also for other insect transmitted diseases, including those of humans. - The only single definitive work that provides both historical and up to date data on the disease - Describes the latest developments in epidemiological modelling, molecular epidemiology and vaccine development, as well as explaining the current global epidemiology of the disease - Outlines the importance and possible mechanisms of overwintering, and the impact of global warming on the vectors and virus distribution

Pages : 1096

Book Description
Bluetongue, African Horse Sickness, and Related Orbiviruses: Proceedings of the Second International Symposium provides the latest scientific information about this group of Orbiviruses, which are transmitted by species of Culicoides (biting midges) and are important causes of disease in domestic livestock and wildlife. Originally presented at the Second International Symposium on the Orbivirus held in Paris, France in June 1991, the book reviews the history and latest data on epizootiology; clinical syndromes and host responses; vector biology, competence, genetics, and capacity; molecular virology and genetics; and diagnostic procedures. The book covers regulatory issues associated with bluetongue, epizootic hemmorrhagic disease, African horse sickness, Ibaraki disease, and equine encephalosis. It also addresses the latest orbiviral diagnostic procedures including ELISA and the polymerase chain reaction; the latest cloning, sequencing, and genetics information of these viruses, and the genetics of oral susceptibility of the vector. Bluetongue, African Horse Sickness, and Related Orbiviruses: Proceedings of the Second International Symposium is an excellent reference source for researchers in arbovirology, veterinary regulatory officials, foreign animal disease diagnosticians, and veterinary students.

Emerging Viral Diseases

Emerging Viral Diseases PDF Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309314003
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
In the past half century, deadly disease outbreaks caused by novel viruses of animal origin - Nipah virus in Malaysia, Hendra virus in Australia, Hantavirus in the United States, Ebola virus in Africa, along with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), several influenza subtypes, and the SARS (sudden acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) coronaviruses - have underscored the urgency of understanding factors influencing viral disease emergence and spread. Emerging Viral Diseases is the summary of a public workshop hosted in March 2014 to examine factors driving the appearance, establishment, and spread of emerging, re-emerging and novel viral diseases; the global health and economic impacts of recently emerging and novel viral diseases in humans; and the scientific and policy approaches to improving domestic and international capacity to detect and respond to global outbreaks of infectious disease. This report is a record of the presentations and discussion of the event.

Arthropods as Vectors of Emerging Diseases

Arthropods as Vectors of Emerging Diseases PDF Author: Heinz Mehlhorn
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642288421
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 398

Book Description
Global warming and globalization are the buzzwords of our time. They have nearly reached a religious status and those who deny their existence are considered modern heretics. Nevertheless, the earth has become an overcrowded village, traversable within a single day. Thus it is hardly surprising that besides persons and goods also agents of disease are easily transported daily from one end of the world to the other, threatening the health and lives of billions of humans and their animals. Agents of diseases (prions, viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites) are not only transmitted by body contact or direct exchange of bodily fluids, but also by means of vectors which belong to the groups of licking or blood-sucking arthropods (mites, ticks, insects) that live close to humans and their houses. Without a doubt the recently accelerating globalization supports the import of agents of disease into countries where they never had been or where they had long since been eradicated, leading to a false sense of living on a “safe island.” These newly imported or reintroduced diseases – called “emerging diseases” – may lead to severe outbreaks in cases where the countries are not prepared to combat them, or in cases where viruses are introduced that cannot be controlled by medications or vaccines. Arthropods are well known vectors for the spread of diseases. Thus their invasion from foreign countries and their spreading close to human dwellings must be blocked everywhere (in donor and receptor countries) using safe and effective measures. This book presents reviews on examples of such arthropod-borne emerging diseases that lurk on the fringes of our crowded megacities. The following topics show that there is an ongoing invasion of potential vectors and that control measures must be used now in order to avoid disastrous outbreaks of mass diseases.

World Livestock 2013

World Livestock 2013 PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251079277
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
The World Livestock 2013: Changing disease landscapes looks at the evidence of changing disease dynamics involving livestock and explores three key areas: the Pressure, including drivers and risk factors that contribute to disease emergence, spread and persistence; the State, describing the disease dynamics that result from the Pressure and their subsequent impact; and the Response, required both to adapt and improve the State and to mitigate the Pressure. The report argues that a comprehensive approach for the promotion of global health is needed to face the complexities of the changing disease landscapes, giving greater emphasis on agro-ecological resilience, protection of biodiversity and efficient use of natural resources to ensure safer food supply chains, particularly in areas worst afflicted by poverty and animal diseases. Speeding up response times by early detection and reaction – including improved policies that address disease drivers – is key. Forging a safer, healthier world requires engagement in the One Health approach, which involves all relevant actors and disciplines spanning animal, human and environmental health sectors.
